Rack bag recommendations?

Post by Thornyone »

I have used a Revolution rack top bag from Edinburgh Bicycle Coop for the last several years and was going to replace it, but it seems to have been discontinued.
I use the bag to carry a couple of spare inner tubes (I’m a pessimist  ); D lock, smallish tool kit, and swimming kit (pack towel, so not bulky). The current bag can be expanded a bit too.
What I want is:
1) attaches with four velcro straps (I don’t want a fancy “footplate” type of attachment)
2) not too high, because my saddle isn’t high :(
3) not rigid, because I hold it in place and compress it with a large velcro band type strap
4) a water bottle pocket at rear would be a bonus, but I can live without it
5) not too expensive, i.e. less than £45 ideally
My current bag is nearly ideal but looking rather tatty now and it is pretty annoying that the replacements I can see don’t seem to tick all my boxes.

Thanks for this, it looks worth investigating.

More money than you budgeted for, so you may reject it on that basis. But for me it is the best bit of luggage ever. So long as your rack isn't narrow on top. Rugged, hard wearing material, simple velcro fixing, and it just feels like it is made to last. Contents stay dry. Mine has been going for a long time and looks set to last and last. And made in Lancashire. Could be too tall, so worth checking.

I agree it's very good. It's also available for £49 from Spa (add an inner tube or other sundry item to make the order over £50 and get free postage).

Altura night vision on their site for £19.94 posted well worth a look at in my humble opinion.

Thanks. I have Carradry Panniers from Spa and would be very happy with another Carradice product, but am not sure looking at the dimensions that it is wide enough to take my ‘D’ lock (6.25”/16cm wide at base). Also, is it flexible enough to allow a bit of compression? My rack is wide and long.

The bag is claimed to be 16cm wide, and gives a bit if you force stuff in. So if your lock is not too long you should be okay. On a Tubus Cargo rack I can't imagine a bigger bag fitting unless it overhung the back. This bag more or less fills the top space of that big rack and overhangs the sides a little.

Thanks. I’ll double check the sizing. If I can set the bag back a bit on the rack to avoid the saddle it should be OK. My current bag is long because it has a bottle holder at rear and yet it is fully supported by the rack (a long Thorn rack) so I don’t think bag length will be an issue. Excessive height is my main concern as long as my lock will squeeze in.

I've one of these:-

BABSRT-10 Bike Smart Rack Trunk 1.0

From Planet X, it was about £20 IIRC, lifetime guarantee (hmm?) but IMHO very good product and exceptional value

ETA - I'd say it is 'semi-rigid'

This is what I would buy within the given criteria:

I haven't used this specific bag, but I've been really happy with my Altura Arran rack pack. It's 10 years old and still going strong. The sides are slightly bowed out from being over stuffed, and if I'm honest, it looks a bit tatty, but it also gets almost daily use.

That's likely to be quite tall, and may not fit under a low saddle. they do a couple of other bags that might work, but neither is a rack pack.

I think that has stiff sides?
