help: which cassette/chain

Post by nathanglass »

New to this forum and cycling -- apologies in advance if this post doesn't meet forum etiquette for some reason.

I ride a Specialized Sirrus Elite hybrid bike, 2011 model pictured here https://www.bicyclebluebook.com/searchlistingdetail.aspx?id=22149.

I use it for commutes in a relatively hilly part of London.

I need to replace the cassette and chain, but would value some pointers on which ones to get. It's an 8 speed Shimano cassette. How many teeth should I get, and which chain? I was planning to get something like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Shimano-HG50-Speed-Cassette-Silver/dp/B00D9LFQ4M/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1537217022&sr=8-2&keywords=cassette%2BShimano%2B8%2Bspeed&th=1&psc=1. Any pointers really appreciated :D

That is a good choice but it can be had for cheaper elsewhere(the 11-32 option is what is on your bike at present). Mated to a kmc z7 or z8s chain and you should be sorted for £20 all up.
The older I get the more I’m inclined to act my shoe size, not my age.

If you need the 32 tooth bottom gear, I would consider getting a 12-32 tooth cassette (CS-HG200) instead. You will loose your top gear, but will have closer ratios between the other gear. If you have a 48 chainring in front (I think you do), 48-12 should be a high enough gear for that kind of bike and usage.
