Bonnick or Riley Cycles, Coventry

Post by 9494arnold »

Doing some research re Bonnick Cycles which were bought by Riley and ultimately became the Riley Motor Company.
Already in contact with the National Cycle Museum Historian and have seen the stuff on a Google search.
On behalf of the Riley Register who are collaborating with Coventry Council on an Archive Project.

(And if you have a Riley or Bonnick bike which is surplus to your requirements I might be tempted to purchase it to accompany my 1930 Riley)

Have you spoken to the people at Warwick University (in Coventry) where they hold what I think is called the "National Cycle Archive" ?

Yes cheers for that Rob, they are contributing to the Project.

We send some of the Cycle Museum's Paper Archive to them in collaboration with the Veteran Cycle Club,we struggle to keep it in suitable conditions.

Is this the gentleman who assisted Stourbug in one of their rides into Stratford on Avon a few years ago?
Face seems familiar. (I was driving the Sag Wagon and doing some field mechanical work !)

Indeed, guilty as charged - it was the very first Stourbug Challenge in May 2007 IIRC - and if you have heard of the MacRide Events that a lot of Stourbuggers rode in, that's me too (although I've retired from that activity)

Bonnick bicycle!
I’m showing a photo of my Bonnick path racer 1892, found in Sweden!

I think I've seen this in the VCC Magazine (?) .
Very Nice. You don't fancy trading it for a Hurtu Cushion Tyre safety do you? :)
I'd like one to go with my 1930 Riley car.

Fair enough.
Still only 2 Bonnicks I am aware of, yours and one owned by a family who have several Sidevalves.
(I do know the name, but probably best I don't post it here )
(my father has recently sold a Sidevalve, still got 2 Nines, 33 Lynx and 1929 Mk 4 Fabric Tourer. And mines a 1930 "Tin" Tourer)

Do you come to the Coventry Rally? It's be nice to see it 'in the flesh'

I think I know the family but they’ve got a Riley Gents bike 1903!
I’ve ridden it!
I have not heard of another Bonnick.
I would love to bring it to Coventry but tricky nowdays. I live in Sweden....!
