Lycra is easy to sew. If you use a zig-zag stitch with a machine, and try not to stretch it when sewing, it goes fine. I've patched stuff my cycling kit before. I'm thinking of having a go at making my own kit. I don't like the way commercially available stuff fits me. I've got a pair of shorts I really like that are disintigrating, so I was thinking of using the seat/pad from those. And I've got some lycra left over from Mini V's Halloween costume.
edited to add: there's an older thread (pun intended
) with instructions for hand sewing lycra viewtopic.php?f=1&t=70477
p.s. even damaged clothes can be re-used or recycled. Some charities will take them and convert them into rags or crafting projects. Some send them to developing countries, where they are either repaired or the material is used to make other clothing.
