Converting GPX file to show up as map on laptop

Post by francovendee »

I have a large number of GPX files on the laptop that I want to look at without putting them on the phone. I was able to do this using GPS Visualiser but due to changes in google I cannot now do it using that site. Does anyone know of an alternative to GPS Visualiser?

Try uploading them onto BikeHike UK.
I use that a lot. Nice facilities and you can see them on OS mapping too.

They have an issue with Google Maps, but if you click OK in the window, all will be well.

You can also upload the gpx files to the rideswithgps.co.uk website and view the maps of the routes.

Thanks Mick, I'll take a look.
When I find a way of looking at them I'll label them more clearly. At present they have very vague descriptions without a distance.

You don't say what your laptop is. I use viking (plotting, printing) or pytrainer (recordings) for my gpx files.

I think you can upload them to openstreetmap and view them from there.

You could try.

www.gpsies.com

I prefer the

"classic view".

I use cycletravel to generate abbreviated "turn only" gps and then import them into gpsies for editing/finessing.

It will also auto prune gpxs for you if you feel yours has too many points, though as I said mine are effectively pruned before I give them to it.

I use QGIS (https://qgis.org/en/site/forusers/download.html)
Install is Next/I Agree/Next/Install
Add GPX files by simply drag and drop onto the map area.
You'll get a popup asking you whether you want to load waypoints, routes, tracks, trackpoints or routepoints. For a ridden GPX, there will only be track and trackpoint with anything present, for one downloaded from (eg) an Audax UK calendar ride page there could be everything, depending on how the file was created.
For background data, it's simplest to add an OpenStreetMap layer using the QuickMapServices plugin (install via the plugins menu).

Walklakes.co.uk will display and create gpx files on OS maps, and not just of the Lake District.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up using Ride with GPS as I already use it for recording my rides but didn't realise I could import a gpx file.

I've now got the task of giving the files a better description with a distance.

I have used this for visualising and for editing gpx files:

I found it brilliant
