Can't for the life of me find a simple way to merge (join) 2 or more GPX files then export them to Osmand or other similar program. Online programs don't work or are stupidly complex. The alternative is to edit files in a text editor. Tried Garmin Basecamp and yes it does do it but importing into Komoot produces a real mess of conflicting routes with loops and spurs off which didn't exist in the original. Cycle.travel won't import the file.
The only Mac program that claims to do this is Adze and that is so slow that I've given up on it.
Surely there's a simpler way.

For Audax, I always record and save in sections and join afterwards to upload to Strava, it's worked with Garmin Etrex, Touring and 200, plus with a simple logger. Although it's promoted as a utility for Strava,you get a GPX file which you can do whatever you want with. I've never had a problem, but to avoid any possible issues I've copied them off the device to the PC first so I still have the original files.

Tried this and the resulting track wouldn't open in cycle.travel, Basecamp ( said it wasn't a valid file) or Komoot. It sounds like you're talking about tracks you've recorded. I'm talking about routes I've planned or download from other sources.

Windows only I'm afraid. Apart from that it looks like it would do the job.

Gpsbabel would work. Very flexible but might be considered a bit fiddly.

Was searching under "merge GPX files", searching for "edit GPS files" brought up GPS Editor on the Apple Itunes store which claims it'll do this but then so did Adze. Worth a punt at £5 but I'm not holding my breath.

Tried that and yes it's very fiddly. I'm hoping for a no brainer solution.

GPSPrune is an interface which uses GPSBabel in the background

I use Garmin BaseCamp but its a knife and fork edit.
You have to cut and splice by hand and the menus are not intuitive.
Also if the files were generated from ride data you lose that as well.
Other than that it can be done.

If you want to get techy, try QGIS, a very powerful, open source GIS program. Hours of fun, but you really have to want to use it.

Guilty as charged

Perhaps you could open a business joining gps routes as there's a dearth of simple software to use.
Often I find that on a trip I get to the end of the plotted route without knowing it and miss a turning. Once went 8 miles further down a French cyclepath when I should have turned off. No alternative but to go back - I wasn't popular with swimbo.

Can I ask why you need to get into the complexities of merging two gpx's OP?

I quite often on longer rides switch to a different pre-prepared gpx.

If I'm concerned that I might ride past the point on the first where I want to switch to a new route I can always make a copy and then just chop the end off. The garmin will then tell me when I am "arriving".

Do be careful if doing any gpx tinkering that you syntax check it.
