Short-term insurance (one month)

Post by becky.morton »

Does anyone know any companies which offer bicycle insurance for just one month (not for a whole year)? My current insurance expires very soon and it only offers annual cover. I am planning to sell my bike soon but would like to have it insured until I do. Thanks!

I was looking at this the other day. Two things to note:

The premiums can vary month by month according to how many claims the other customers in your "group" have made. (In effect, if someone else makes a claim, you help pay for it.) There's a defined maximum limit, though.

The terms require you to lock your bike with a Sold Secure Gold rated lock when away from home, regardless of its value, which is more rigorous than some other policies and means using a fairly heavy lock. Arguably that makes it less than ideal for roadies who want to know they're covered during a cafe stop and don't want to lug half their own body weight in metal around with them. (Some of them are very skinny. :-))

I'm not saying it's a bad idea, and it does have the flexibility to be used as a stopgap option for a month or two, but it's worth being aware of those features.

Have you checked to see if your household insurance covers bikes?
