large Rubber O rings

Post by francovendee »

I have a Sigma computer that is held on by what looks like a large rubber 'O' ring. I can find small ones but need something long enough to go around a suspension fork.
I did a search for O rings and found something aimed at a certain part of the male anatomy  Not at all what I need!

Any suggestions where I can get the large O rings from?

Camping and caravanning centers often keep boxes of assorted sizes.

Plumbing fittings?
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

if you google 'cat-eye spare fixing bands' you will find the very similar parts for securing many models of cat-eye light etc. eg.

https://www.tredz.co.uk/cateye-brackets-and-spares

These parts are (unlike many O rings) allegedly made of weather-resistant rubber. However I think there may be better quality parts out there.

You can buy O ring seals from specialist vendors, plumbing merchants and on e-bay. FWIW you can buy (say) a cheap push-fit waste fitting which will contain two O rings of about 40mm diameter for about a quid.

cheers

That was the suggestion when I went looking for spares for mine, I walked past the heating shop opposite my flat, where I ended up buying them to get to the bike shop to be told to go back where I'd came from.

Warning: useless wisecrack reply.

This is what I immediately thought of from the subject:
Image
Dr. Feynman dug into the task. The pivotal moment in the investigation came on February 11, 1986, when, on national television, Dr. Feynman held up sample material of the “O-ring” rubber gasket from one of the shuttle’s solid-fuel booster rockets and dropped it into his glass of ice water. The demonstration illuminated Dr. Feynman’s theory that the gasket lost resiliency at freezing temperatures – thus allowing gases to escape and the shuttle to explode.

Google O ring seals - you'll avoid c**k rings that way. They are usually nitrile rubber so shouldn't perish quickly.

Just go to your local hose and hydraulics company .. There are hundreds of them in the UK ... They will sell them for pennies

'Viton' covers a range of different fluoroelastomer compounds, which vary in their performance considerably. There is a guide here

http://rainierrubber.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Viton-Selection-Guide.pdf

one of the aspects in which the compounds vary is in 'compression set resistance' which relates to the way the O ring is permanently deformed out of shape when installed. This may also relate to its elasticity when used as a tension rubber. However most viton grades are also more UV resistant than other rubbers, so overall even the least good viton grade may be a better choice for this use.

I joined 2 smaller rubber o rings together to fit a Sigma transmitter to my suspension forks.
