where to buy a pedal spanner that is 3.2mm thick or less?

Post by tommydog »

I need to fit my mks ezy superior pedals, and they need a 15mm pedal spanner that is 3.2mm thick or less. MKS do a 3.2mm spanner, but I can't find stock in the UK and don't want to wait a long time for shipping. I went to my local bike shop today and all of their spanners were thicker than 3.2mm. Does anyone know where I could order a suitable spanner online in the UK?

Have you tried using a cone spanner, gently? They are thinner than normal spanners.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I thought those cone spanners are designed for fairly low torque? I need to tighten the pedals to around 30 newton metre.

Any recommendations, as I do like good quality tools.

I have a pedal spanner.
Just looked at it and measured it with my vernier callipers. 3mm.

It has a blue rubberised handle. Finish Line I think, but not Park. Had it for years and not sure where I bought it. Online I'm sure.

Found it!
Silverline.

Despite the reviews, it's ok. Not workshop quality by any means, but as I don't use a pedal spanner from one month to the next - so what?
It works!

This. Never mind the price and no-name brand, the steel is stronger than the Park Tool SCW equivalent. However, the spanner is short and unpadded, so wear a leather glove for the pedal job.

Silverline.

I'm pleasantly surprised. I had a look and my Silverline regular spanners are quite chunky at around 5.5mm. I also checked my current pedal spanner - Jobsworth (Planet X?) - 4mm thick. I wondered about my old 50p toolkit multispanner (pictured) which is 3mm thick but the bottom opening seems to be some sort of imperial size (or maybe is simply missized!) which is just slightly smaller than 15mm so it would need filing out for use on pedals.

Anyway, Silverline stuff isn't posh but most of it seems to work most of the time, like Bluespot and a bit better than Pedalpro IMO.

I’ve often wondered why pedal spanners are so thin. I haven’t found a pedal I couldn’t work on with my 5.2 mm thick Unior 1610/2 pedal spanner.

Ezy pedal fittings have been annoying mechanics the world over with the very narrow flats since they came out! I have use one of those 'throw away' hook spanners all bikes used to come with as well as assorted cone spanners. IME its not fitting them that's the big problem but removing them down the line!
Convention? what's that then?

Hopefully you have an answer to your post, so can I ask a question.

Why do you want to fit these Ezy pedals? Is it a security thing, ie no pedals, bike less likely/able to be nicked?

I only ask because I take my pedals off when handing my bike over to eg railway staff for separate transporting. It stops then riding it around.

I got this Cone Spanner in the end, which did the job perfectly:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00GP0FL76/

What I like about it, is it also features a 3/8" hex spanner near to the main jaws. 3/8" is appox 9.5mm, and I was able to press in a 10mm hex socket carefully with a vice. This then made a good torque spanner to use with my torque wrench. It's not really necessary to torque the pedals, but I am a bit OCD like that :D

Annoying the ones that won't fit pedal washers underneath
It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best,
since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them.
Thus you remember them as they actually are...

Did you use a torque wrench extension calculator?
