Post by Grandad »

Does the Third Party insurance that is included in CUK and BC membership include cover for e-bikes?

Answer: Where the main source of propulsion is electrical, the cycle would not be covered as it would be classified as a motor vehicle and should therefore have Road Traffic Act insurance. However, if it has pedals and is mainly used as a conventional bicycle (unicycle, tricycle, tandem or triplet) and only has electric assistance then it would be covered

I've had a look at my Home Contents policy. The section that provides Third Party cover for accidents caused by family members living at the insured address excludes, among other things, motor vehicles. The definition of motor vehicles specifically excludes "electrically assisted pedal cycles that are not legally required to pay Vehicle Excise Duty for road use"
