35-406 tyre

Postby belgiangoth » 29 May 2019, 11:41am

I have a 40-406 tyre on the bike, which is just a bit too close to the mudguard (clogs when going through anything muddy). IUdeally I would go only a little smaller to 38-406 or 35-406. I'd opt for Kojaks, but they size as 32s in the 622 size. Also considering greedspeed scorchers, except that they are expensive and I would be banking on them sizing smaller than marathons. Maybe Marathon race?
What would you recommend?
If I had a baby elephant I would let it sleep in the garage in place of the car. If I had either a garage or a car. (I miss sigs about baby elephants)

Can confirm 35x406 wired Kojaks come up narrow on 406 Sun CR18 rims

Only slightly off topic - what is the tool being used?

Aldi digital vernier calipers, whose accuracy seems to agree with my non digital much more expensive Mitutoyo non digital very closely :)

That's standard undersizing for 35mm Kojaks in both 406 or 700C :?

Thanks for that NUKe, I have contacted them about tyre sizing, but no joy. The kojaks are 32s, which is an option, but not one I will explore when I already have some 28s. I would have considered spending on a narrow 40; I had hoped the greenspeed scorchers sized small compared with the marathons. As they have no tread there’s a good chance they would fit, but I’m not going to gamble £40 on it.

As a Moulton user, I have Conti GP on the front and Conti SC on the rear.
The GP hardly seems to ever wear, but the rears wear a lot. SC lasts longer than GP on the rear.
Both are 406-28 on CR18 rims.

GP comes out as 28mm
SC comes out as 29mm
Near enough, I reckon.
The bike came with Schwalbe Duranos. Horrible.

What's so good about Kojaks or Gripspeed?

Kojaks are basically a cheap lightweight racing slick.
I've used them once on my bent trike but found them to harsh as I could never get the pressure just right.
A larger volume tyre like the old 42-406 Supremes gives me slightly more leeway with tyre pressure, hard enough to reduce rolling resistance while still soft enough to reduce road buzz.

I assume Gripspeed are similar.

Luck ....... :D
