What the heck is this tool for ........ cleaning

I believe it is intended for scraping all the rubbish out that accumulates in between the cogs on the back wheel. I have one, and it has never really worked that well for me. I tend to use the stretched edge of a duster, or something that's a bit like a glorified giant pipe cleaner, but everyone will have their own methods!

I believe it's correct name is 'perineum' brush.

Especially useful after those long, crusty days in the saddle. For the more hirsute pedaller.

Which is just horribly jarring... they are sprockets, not cogs. Fundamentally different things.

Not quite. Any disc with teeth on it is a cog, the terms ‘sprocket’ and ‘ring’ just refer to the function and position of the cog.

Forget it ................... unless you have a freewheel set.

If it's a cassette, buy or make a chainwhip and buy a lockring tool.
Take off the cassette and clean it that way.
Do it regularly and it's easy peasy.

No need to remove the cassette to clean it,I find a paint brush dipped in White Spirit and brushed on the sprockets,being careful not to get any on the wheel or freehub bearings,then cleaned off with a rag worked between the sprockets.I the cassette isnt too mucky I spray the cassette with GT85 then use the rag to finish off.
My cassettes never get so mucky they need a toothed scraper as in the OP's photo

As it happens, I worked out exactly what these things are for the other week, and it had nothing to do with cassettes.

A cog has teeth that mesh with those of another cog or worm gear etc. A sprocket’s teeth meshes with a roller chain.

They are different.

Cog can also refer to the individual teeth on a cog, and could stretch to those on a sprocket as well, but the whole round thing is a sprocket, not a cog.
