Shimano Nexus 8 adjustment

Postby maxsolo68 » 19 Jun 2019, 9:22am

Is it possible to adjust the gearing on a Shimano Nexus 8?
I find I am always cycling in the higher gears, I rarely go lower than 5th and would love to adjust the gearing so I can cycle faster.
Is that possible?

You can get a variety of sprockets to fit the Nexus 8.

Fit a smaller one and it will increase the overall ratios.
What size chainwheel do you have and what size sprocket?

yep. Things that increase the gearing (which is what you want)

- smaller sprocket
- bigger chainring
- bigger diameter wheels (type of bike)

If you bike has very small wheels then you can soon run out of inexpensive options for raising the gearing.

You don't say how long your rides have been or how much cycling you have done but (for example) it is easy enough for a relative novice to assume they need much higher gears on the basis of a few shorter rides. If this might apply to you, it might be worth delaying making major changes to the bike until you have a few more miles under your belt; some don't change their minds about gearing but most do.
