Postby cyclingsoftly » 1 Jul 2019, 8:46pm

I would like to go from leics to bham and was wondering if anyone would recommended it being feasible ? could anyone give me any info as to the pros and cons. Iv looked at maps online at it seems a 3 -4 hr bike ride, does in seem plausable in one go ? Any tips ? Thanks.

A good starting point.

It is certainly feasible with a bit of planning. I know there are nice roads through the Bosworth / Atherstone area, but i don't know the best way into Brum. Where exactly do you want to travel to and from, and what sort of bike will you be using?

The Canals around Birmingham are often a good alternative to the roads, certainly close to the centre.
Most have an excellent metalled surface, only downside is they can be quite busy, particularly in the centre.

Many thanks fir the responses. Il be using googl maps to find my way from one city center to the other. Ive had a look at the link given it is extremely useful, many thanks ! I also wanted to ask if anyone has a real time duration it took them, it states 3 to 4 hours but dont know what averages of speed its using to calculate.

i have 2 bikes to choose from one, which i suspect is the one thats more likely il consider :

https://www.amazon.com/Pure-Cycles-Clas ... B06XK6S5W6

and a mountain bike,

Could anyone recommend which one would be better, i rekon the road bike but not sure of the terrain.

Many thanks.

Personally I would avoid both. If you want a budget bike, try Decathlon. If you know little about bikes, mail order is asking for trouble.

Think first about what type of riding you intend, then work through to the bike. Best of all, find a local shop doing secondhand and start there. You get a really decent bike for £300 secondhand from a ship, whereas to hit that price new compromises have to be made.

The route will depend partially on what area of Leicester you're starting from and where in Birmingham you're heading for. I'd suggest working from the ends, finding routes out of and into the cities and then linking them up. I've only ridden into and out of Birmingham North <>South so no help there. I have ridden Leic <> Meriden a few times, I don't think I've ridden the exact same route twice, but something like the link below (Which I've used most recently) is quiet roads, not very hilly, doesn't go through many towns and is suitable for any bike.

I get very roughly around 40 miles and under 2,000' climbing.
So not over long or lumpy.
So for a novice, around 4-5 hour.
Your best bet is to split it into 2x~20 mile rides and stop at a cafe midway for a rest.

As for which bike, the most comfortable ........ :D
A road type bike will probably be faster, it's what they're designed for.
But if it cripples you after a couple of hours and the MTB type doesn't then is the extra speed worth it.

Luck ............ :D

Cycle Travel gives a route of 45 miles centre to centre, using mostly rural country lanes until you hit the outskirts of Birmingham at about 38 miles. That’s a morning’s ride for a reasonably fit cyclist or perhaps a full day ride for a less experienced cyclist.

You can leave Leicester on the track of the old Great Central Railway line going SW, which will take you out as far as Fosse Park. You can then pick your way through the lanes from Narborough.
