I've recently received reports of a tarred and over-chipped road being reopened before it had set. Some bikes have been harmed, including at least one carbon bike where the inside of the forks have been seriously gouged/scored by chippings that were tarred to the wheel sides. I've advised them to take pictures of everything and claim for new forks, possibly frame too if the stays have suffered the same.

In the past I've claimed successfully for new tyres destroyed after a road was reopened unswept with sharp planings over it, but I expect them to fight a more expensive frame claim more strenuously, so has anyone here successfully claimed for forks or frame damaged by roadworks or can you put me in touch with anyone who has?

Good luck with that! If there was a "loose chippings" sign the HD will probably shelter behind it.

I suspect it was the usual "loose chippings max 20mph" sign. It wasn't the loose chippings that caused the problems, but the exposed wet tar, so I doubt that sign suffices for reopening the road too soon.

Maybe I should advise the riders to submit FoIA requests for the job paperwork. Maybe there's some sort of log or checklist to show when it was checked and signed off as safe, possibly after they passed through.

You mean they actually repair the roads in the UK
