Uses for an old/near new tyre?

Postby Sweep » 28 Jul 2019, 4:47pm

Apologies if covered before, and also wasn't entirely sure where to put this.

Connected to another recent post of mine - I recently had a Vittoria Randonneur fail on the sidewall after very little use.

So the tyre tread surface and all the middle bit of the tyre is almost as new.

A bit of it has already been snipped with some powerful snips to provide very good padding to get a 500ml trangia bottle to stay put in a water bottle cage.

I have now cut off all the sidewalls and am left with the central bit.

Anything I can do with it/fashion it into?

I am tempted to try to make a belt with it (I may just about have enough left) but would need some info on how to attach the buckle/clasp/whatever. I assume that the components and tools for this would be available on ebay if I knew where to look.

I sense that this might be a topic for our in-house stitchmaster gattonero.

Contributions from all welcomed, though - serious or not.

With the right sized buckle you could make a belt out of it.

thick handle bar tape? or I remember you dented the top tube on a bike - make wrap some around the top tube ( as I have done ) and use ties

top tube is fine mercalia - I just rough painted over the ding and scratches - marks still visible but all weather protected. And smooth. some rubber on the tubes would just collect muck.

Though would I acknowledge make that bike look unnatractive to thieves.

Have found this on the beltmaking.

https://www.instructables.com/id/trendy ... cle-tires/

and some useful pointers for what to look for on ebay.

Am kinda encouraged though may already have chopped too much off my old tyre.

time to buy another vittoria and do some more roughground peddaling perhaps.

I ways like the images tab in Google in these cases. If your buying by buckle rivets / screws

The wine bottle holder and.the little stool look fun

I like the idea of gluing some of the tread to a wood block to use as a stamp. You could print it on some of the more stupid no cycling signs.

Some ideas here for uses for old tubes. https://www.cycleofgood.com/product-cat ... nd-purses/

You can donate your tubes to them and they also take entire bikes to go to Malawi.

I used to bodge up my own p******e-proof tyres, took an old worn outer, cut our the beads and a few cm of the circumference, it fitted neatly inside a newer tyre of the same type, got very few p****s

I think that was a standard procedure back then, did others do likewise?

Now I just pay a lot for indestructible tyres :?

reohn2 is far from being the only one to dash off a would-be helpful reply before fully reading the question.

I've just had the same on a Sony user forum when the reply to my question about a radio asked for more details of my non-existent smartphone. :(
