Uses for an old/near new tyre?

On threads like this I normally advocate immediate recycling as that obviates the need for further metal or oil extraction. However, AIUI, bicycle tyres are still not recyclable. However, they will still go for incineration (I doubt there's much landfill these days) and thus at least be used for producing electricity with some residue. I don't think that's a terrible use or end-use of the Earth's resources, especially given the use to which it was put (i.e. not a motor tyre).

As regards inner tubes, I do use them for underlay on handlebars but most I repair again and again; I haven't bought an inner tube in years.

So back to the real question: maybe the soles of boots, shoes etc?

I taped short lengths of tyre with the bead cut off onto the backs of my tubular bars before putting the tape on, so as to provide a wider top surface and spread the load over a wider area. With low-end Bike Ribbon cork gel it works quite nicely.

I've also cut tyre boots out of old tyre but never had to use one.

Fruit tree ties on the allotment. Also wrap for the wheelbarrow handles . Wrapping over the top of wooden stakes etc .

I used to bodge up my own p******e-proof tyres, took an old worn outer, cut our the beads and a few cm of the circumference, it fitted neatly inside a newer tyre of the same type, got very few p****s

I think that was a standard procedure back then, did others do likewise?

+1 although you can fit a larger width tyre over a smaller one without having to reduce the circumference. I even didn't bother to cut the bead off but it did make getting them over the rim difficult and even more difficult to remove. If you try this make sure you can remove them before venturing out. You don't want to be stranded unable to lever a double bead off the rim.

I did this on the tandem to use up a stock of continental top touring's which had a reputation for side wall failures.
