Can I run 10 speed gears, sti, rear mech etc and still use this chainset?
I realise that Shimano say it is for 9 speed but there are plenty of chainsets out there that aren't gear number specific.
If not I'd be interested to know why not!
Thanks
John
shimano m590 chainset. 9 speed only?
Re: shimano m590 chainset. 9 speed only?
Interesting question, but wouldn't it be better in the tech section?

Re: shimano m590 chainset. 9 speed only?
I have an m590 48/36/26. I recently found some barely used t611 10 speed rings on ebay for £11 as future spares. Both 26t cogs are stamped 9/10 speed (58g), the middle rings are identical (96g), the m590 outer ring (not drilled for a guard) is 98g the t611 outer ring is 110g and I think the extra weight is reinforcement to fit a chainguard.

IIRC there are two different versions of FC-M590, and one is meant for 10s

Re: shimano m590 chainset. 9 speed only?
Yes it should be in technical but that seems to be ignored so often.
Most chainsets work with most chains. 7/8 speed ones can allow 11 speed chains to drop in the gap if 11 speed mechs are used and 11 speeds don't play nicely with with wide 7 speed chains . All generalisations. Most are fine if the numbers are close. Wouldn't worry me if it was one out.

Thank you for the replies and images.
I will fiddle in the shed and report back. This boils down to being a bit tight and lazy. Not changing the chainset would be great.
I did mean to put this in the technical section, but only realised after I'd posted and didn't know how to move it.

Re: shimano m590 chainset. 9 speed only?
For reference - the answer to my own question is yes.
I am jow running a ten speed set up -sti, chain, front and rear derailleurs and cassette whilst keeping my 9 speed deore chainset.
Happy days. Much expense spared.

The answer to your question is an unequivocal yes, it'll work perfectly with 10 speed.
