Initialisms

Post by soapbox »

AIUI, IME, IIRC, FWIW, OEM, GOM, MA, PITA, IMO...

What do they all mean? I can fathom out most of the cycling-specific initialisms, such as BB, STI, MTB, etc, but some of the other stuff makes reading some posts hard work.

Please can someone post what all the above (and any others) stand for. Thanks.

They probably come from mobile phone use, although it is increasingly common for aficionados to refer to TV programmes by their initials. I find it frustrating when people bring in those from other walks of life eg a couple of years ago we had somebody post about 6YOD which apparently means 6 year old daughter. There is one term I'd like to apply --- TWIT (Those Who Invent Terms)

IME; in my experience
OEM; original equipment Manufacturer
MA; Mechanical Advantage.

I sympathise. When I were a lad, it was expected that you first wrote it out in full with the abbreviation in brackets.

If you Google the abbreviation/acronym then you can normally get an answer (or 2 or 3 or....). This means that you and possibly many others have to do some work, to save some lazy bigger from writing it out.

there is only ever one commonly used here, and in the majority of threads where it is used it is spelt out too.
