Desperate for a drier 2020!

Not too bad. 4145 miles, my highest since 2012, despite more holidays than usual. At 71 with almost-extreme COPD, do for me!
Re: How was Cycling 2019 for you?
Started the year still recovering from a bulging disc, finished it with 8 rides in 8 days, feeling pretty good despite permanent femoral nerve injury leaving an atrophied vastus medialis and numb inner calf(saphenous nerve). No pain and as comfortable on the bike as I,ve ever been which I put down to the lower back strengthening exercises.Looking forward to 2020.

Hi,
How long you had nerve problem?
I have suffered nerve problem in my thigh for and probably affected calf 20 Years.
Result is muscle wastage (hardly noticeable) but can be seen and measured (tape rule) only cycling and work physical lifting etc has kept it minimal I reckon.
One month after ulna nerve damage I could not hold a knife clean teeth turn ignition key.
Keep on top of the physio.

Probably about 150 miles.
Yeah, I know. But my 23 stone self got on a bike for the first time in over 20 years in August, and it's done nothing but rain since mid September.
The diet is on hold - currently full of cheese. I've only gained a pound over Christmas so it could have been worse. But I'll press on. I've still lost 80lb since June.
2019 has been a rotten year for me, because reasons. But determined to smash it in 2020. Got big plans and it starts tomorrow.

Hi,
Well done on weight loss.
I normally gain a few kgs over the hols but lose it pretty quick getting back to bike.
Be careful losing too much too soon especially when you are close to target.
If you are losing week on week don't push it.
I only lost 30 Ibs and it took a few years but I am close to my weight of 40 years ago.
Once you are on track and losing and don't yoyo then hard works done, good luck.

Since nov 2018 when the thigh suffered crippling pain whilst out riding.By the time it had been correctly diagnosed, the nerve had been damaged and the muscle has atrophied.Like you,I,ve exercised it and I can ride and walk up local hills fine.Could have been a lot worse.Any improvement has been down to me,enough said.

I had a pulmonary embolism in the autumn of 2018 which nearly did for me. Had a couple of weeks in hospital. Spent the winter of 2019 getting chest infections. By the summer I was improving and by the autumn I was cycling regularly. I'm okay now but it has taken slightly over a year and I'm still not up to the stage where I can ride 60 or so K just for fun. I hope to get there again in 2020.

Good luck for 2020.
I'm assuming you were in good health before this so must have been a big shock.

it was. Thanks for the thought - very kind. I feel like it’s in the rear view mirror now, but I think the biggest surprise is the length of time to properly recoverfrancovendee wrote:nez wrote:I had a pulmonary embolism in the autumn of 2018 which nearly did for me. Just be careful.this is exactly how I felt before the incident. Ran out of breath cycling on the flat and walking across town. Gp sent me for an X-ray but I ended up in an ambulance. Specialist told me chest X-rays are useless for diagnosing embolisms
Re: How was Cycling 2019 for you?
Did more miles in 2019 than 2018 despite the worse weather in 2019. Joined a cycle club in 2019 for the first time and amazed at some of the older riders fitness. Gives you encouragement to keep at it.
I am here. Where are you?

Ended on 4145 miles! My COPD, diagnosed some 7 years ago, but obviously pre-dated that, is monitored. Exercise has slowed its inevitable and irreversible progress. I'm about 3-5 years beyond when I would have been on an oxygen tank had I simply "taken it easy". Whatever happens now I have bought some extra years with a reasonable quality of life - and I don't and won't aim for "quantity"! Heart attack at top of hill home (whichever way I cycle) will do me just fine as long as it's quick (and my Advance Directive refusing prolongation of life is formally recorded in my hospital records and copy held by my daughter).
Better luck and health to you.

Thanks. Congrats on 4145 miles. Yes I'm hoping for a few thousand this year. 36 kilometres today. Mind you a beautiful young woman went past me as I was puffing up a hill this afternoon. She was going much faster and not puffing. I thought maybe I was hallucinating.
My wife had asked me on Boxing day 'what would you like to do when you're 70?' Meaning trip to Rome or Venice or Sicily or something. I said '100k in Suffolk.' With our sons of course. She offered to meet us half way round with sarnies
