I find it very difficult to get useful past weather information. So for example, what was the weather in Newquay on August 19th last year or even last Saturday? Simple info like max temp, rainfall etc. Any good websites out there? And which obvious ones am I not accessing properly (e.g. Met Office)?

This might be what you need.

I once needed this in order to study the effect of temperature on clinical specimens en route to the laboratory. The Met Office gave us tabulated historical data by return.

Is that the sort of thing you need or is it ad hoc browsing?

I use AccuWeather. If you dig down you can find historical data.

Wunderground is also useful.

That reminds me of a cycling magazine, called Bicycle Action, I used to read. It had a "weather forecast" each month that simply said "it will rain". It was pretty accurate!

I never saw that - I never took the magazine.

http://timeanddate.com/ has some past weather information. I don't know how good it is, but it is global.

The Met Office now has a separate observations website. Click on the map and you can select observations for any period:
