Did Grant Shaps just say that GPs will be able to prescribe cycling?

I don't know, but it's consistent with other announcements.

When my wife was a GP she was able to "prescribe" walking. And those interventions are now all bundled into "social prescribing":

Yes but there is a shortage of 'ship-in-a-bottle' manufactures who can get the bikes in those little brown bottles.

Yes you heard it right. I posted details under Campaigning and councils.

And here for the speech:

Prescriptions are free in Wales, so we can all look forward to free bikes on the NHS after a GP visit. You can go back to the GP and ask for an increased dosage, and if you go back a third tine, they give you a Colnago...

Seems entirely sensible to me. When I started cycling, it dealt with my obesity, helped control my depression, made me much less likely to trouble the GP with heart problems or type 2 diabetes, and has a host of other obvious societal benefits.

I’d also want the courts to be able to impose cycling as a sentence for motoring offences.

Has anyone seen a report on research, carried out years ago in the Netherlands, on the effects on health of elderly after giving up cycling.
From what I remember, a noticeable effect was the deterioration of 'background brain function’ (I assume to mean balance, perception of distance etc.). It went on to suggest that this deterioration could be slowed by exercises such as ‘standing on one leg for intervals’.
I heard that afterwards, the Dutch Government subsidised the purchase of pedelecs for pensioners.

Yeap that's my job!

I take people predominantly men out on bike rides each week.

Along with walking groups, men's sheds and talking cafes.

My wife's a GP locally and occasionally sends people along!

Excellent.
It's the way forward.

It won't happen here or in any rural area, but in cities and towns, it might.

Fingers crossed.

How about writing it up for the magazine?
