Bike Storage... please help

Post by nomm »

I have a small garage shared between numerous people which now contains 2x tandems, 2 x road bikes (likely another one soon), 2x hybirds and a bike trailer... fridge + tools + shelves etc etc

The tandems will stand in the corner - one on a stand and one on something like this https://www.thebikestoragecompany.co.uk ... ycle-rack/

...but as for the other bikes - I was just going to hook them to the wall (vertical) but then did some reading and saw this - https://road.cc/content/review/181325-f ... velo-hinge - then thought thats great, and would solve a lot of space issues, but £30!!!

Any alternatives or advice would be much appreciated

These work fine. I have no connection to the seller, but have some of these. Not quite as versatile, but may suffice?

I'd also consider hauling them up to the ceiling. You can do that either with prepared kits or with bits of rigging from a chandler's. I once did it so that the Windcheetah ran hung from pulleys on two lines over a car.

Don't forget to lock/secure your bikes when they're in the garage.

A copy of that idea £6/ bike. and a few screws.
1 screwfix hook https://www.screwfix.com/p/smith-locke- ... 03mm/5525j £1.99 Screwed into a block of wood which is affixed to a heavy duty hinge https://www.screwfix.com/p/smith-locke- ... 33mm/7705j £7.99 a pair.

I have my bikes hung up with that screwfix hook it’s ideal for that job.

This is my system, largely cribbed from Scotrail...https://www.flickr.com/photos/52358536@N06/31763324048/in/album-72157624571269648/
Having the bikes at staggered heights means you can overlap the handlebars and they take less space. Its easier to hang by the back wheel rather than the front. (try it!) The long hooks are bits of ali. strip bent, the short hooks are Screwfix or similar

That hook (horizontally?) holds the weight - I'm a bit confused by your description and how the design would be - can you send a pic?

That makes sense - a good set of bolts in that block makes sense - thank you

I'm using the https://www.stasdock.com/ wall mount. Maybe not the cheapest there is, but it's strong and looks good as well.

I'm a big fan of the 'Steve Shelter', pioneered by my daughters friend. It is basically an outdoor bike shed without walls. It requires a reasonably secure garden, a wall and a bit of space.

You build a hinged plastic corrugated roof (simple wooden frame) supported when down by a couple of chains and when up by a hook in the wall. It comes down at handlebar level so keeps almost all the rain out, though protection can be supplemented by a dangling tarpaulin (weighted skirt). The hinged roof is lifted up to remove the bikes and access, due to the absence of walls, is excellent.

I'll take a few pictures if anyone is interested.

For wall mounted wheel hangers there are the £1.99 PlanetX ones (also available elsewhere - I got a similar one for about £5 from my local bike shop). Fix it to a block of wood on a heavy duty hinge if you want it to swing.
