Thorn Bike Valuation Please!

Post by Steve72 »

Hello!
I am looking for help, my father has recently died and my Mum is looking to sell her touring bike. I am a very keen road cyclist myself, but this is a new world for me.
I am struggling to find an approx. value....
Thorn 533 21.5 inch frame
"Club Tour Build"
Deore/XTR Groupset + Hubs etc
2008 Build, only one owner, not many miles A1 condition...
Would anyone have a rough idea of what to ask for it?

As we tend to post in answer to buyers asking a similar thing.

Valuation depends a great deal on what maintenance has been done over the years.

For example, if most of the drive train has been replaced on a regular basis then the value is higher than if all the components are original (which can mean that some or all are due for replacement).

It cost about £1300 when Chris Juden reviewed it in 2009.

Thorn has its own forum. You could browse the for sales listings to find something comparable.

My guess is £250-350. Frankly the simplest solution is take lots of decent photos, offer shipment and put it on eBay.

Did you mean your Mother is wanting to sell HER bike?

Unless she is unable to ride for some reason I would recommend her hanging onto it for a while. She may decide she wants to do some riding later on.

Sorry if this offends in any way.

Just been reading elsewhere how people are having good success with selling bikes at the moment, if you decide to put it on Ebay and get what you can it's probably better done sooner rather than later. Decent photos and description will help as always and there's no harm in also linking it to this and other forums.

I'd use Gumtree as well.
