Never used that style but the cheap Alu cross bars have been fine and carried hundreds of sheets of ply and timber.

Never used that type though.

Expect they aren't bad.

It’s very similar to the Thule Cycle Carrier that I have. I’ve had mine for probably 10 years and it’s still working as well as when new. It holds the bike secure, though I’ve found that you need some padding around where the “jaws” clamp the frame. I use a bit of old towel. This protects the paintwork on the frame. I wouldn’t use it for a carbon bike, but it’s been fine with the numerous steel and aluminium bikes that I have. One tip - if you are going to keep it permanently attached to the roof rack and leave it on the car, you need to grease the threads of the bolt in the jaws. It can get rusty and stiff, if left ungreased.

I've used these for steel, aluminium and a carbon bike without problem.

I have recently upgraded to a thule proride 598, a bit more expensive, but much easier to secure the bikes and remove them, which helps when putting them on to the roof of a fairly tall SUV.
