FWIW genuine shimano SPD shoes start at about £35 and new PD-M520 pedals start at around £20 on ebay. Used pedals are cheaper than that; whether you buy new or used, just make sure you get cleats with the pedals.

So anyway £55 gets you going with SPDs using proper shimano kit. There are even cheaper pedals and shoes out there but IMHO it is often a false economy this way; neither are that likely to be any good if they are much cheaper than this.

cheers

+1

I have an old pair of shimano touring shoes and a pair of ro78 road shoes both great value as are the pedals.

A pair of flat /spd combination pedals are really useful too.

So can you get clip in on one side of the pedal and normal on the other side incase you want to use without clip in footwear?
