Gentlemen's underwear

Post by danfoto »

I am in my early 70's, my bike is nowadays my only form of transport, and I ride it wearing normal everyday clothing. And underclothing. It's this latter which is my problem.

I'm still wearing the Y-front type briefs which have hitherto ticked all boxes for me, but I now wish to find an alternative with a bit of a leg to it i.e. underpants which do not have a leg opening hem which sits along the crease at the base of the buttock. And by underpants I mean ordinary ones, not cycling-specific.

I'm 6ft, BMI 24.8, 36-38" waist (according to season),I have normal human being sized thighs and I gather that what I need are called "trunks". If you know of something of good quality at a reasonable price that's available online and might suit, I'd very much appreciate your recommendation. Thank you.

I can recommend Uniqlo for men’s underwear.

The things Uniqlo call ‘trunks’ are more like boxers but I find their supima cotton ‘boxer briefs’ comfortable for general riding. https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/men/innerw ... iew=423530

These may be what you’re after - I always buy these and because of the ‘elasctine’ they don’t go all baggy - very comfy. I don’t wear them for cycling though since I was told it’s expected to go ‘commando’

I use M&S Autograph boxers which I buy in multiple packs and they work well on the bike. For longer rides I use padded underwear under shorts.

However, the trunks from that range are unrideable.

H&M, sizes come up small apparently according to the very helpful male assistant in the store. (Was buying for a family member who was very happy with them.)

A front trunks from Asda do the job nicely and are what I wear all the time.

Cheap at 8 quid for three. https://direct.asda.com/george/men/unde ... D2M1G10C11

M&S do similar and work out slightly cheaper per pair https://www.marksandspencer.com/5-pack- ... lsrc=aw.ds

I use these ones: https://www.marksandspencer.com/3-pack- ... olor=BLACK

Not cheap but they are almost everlasting, really close fitting and smooth so no chafing. I use them for all outdoor activities.

Difficult to judge by picture but does the seam at bottom of leg ride up and reach the saddle area? That’s been my experience with similar products.

For rides under 10miles I wear a pair of autograph premium cotton trunks inside another pair of autograph microskin from MandS. These work very well for me. They are rather thin so 2pairs is better, and chafing is reduced by having 2 layers and some leg. The seams are very flat and no problem, although I would expect problems if I rode thousands of miles with them.

For many rides where I don't need padding, maybe 20 miles or so round london doing this and that I have stacks of synthetic boxer things I got from Aldi in one of their (non cycling) specials.cost around a fiver for two i think, maybe less.
Never had any problems with them. Dry quickly.
