spoke supplier recommendation

Postby simonineaston » 3 Jul 2020, 3:55pm

Quick Q for all you happy wheel-builders out there - where do you buy your spokes from? Looking for an alternative to the excellent-but-pricey Somerset-based mail-order company...

Small wheel spokes from JE James Cycles, nothing bad to report so far, but that is based on my yearly average build (n=1)

cyclebasket, if you are happy with ACI spokes. Currently a box of 144 DB SS spokes (with nipples) is £30.50, which is very good value indeed. 21p a spoke, ~£6.80 for a 32 spoke wheel's worth. 25p each in smaller quantities.

I 've had excellent service from these people https://www.customcutspokes.co.uk I didn't find them particularly pricey but Dorset might be a bit close to Somerset for your liking.

I was going to suggest his name too. If you're looking for odd sized spokes then Ryan is the man as he custom cuts spokes for people, he also builds very good wheels. My rear wheel was rebuilt by him and still virtually true ± 0.5mm after 42 months of 15,000 commuting miles with a pannier bag and 15st rider.

Well, Jung talks a lot about synchronicity. So it is obvious that these two events are meant to be. First, the Fierce & Noble tap-room is open today at midday. Second the spoke supplier specialising in unusual sizes turns out to be located between me and the tap-room! Now, I don't know exactly what Jung would say about this, but I know what's happening...

Herr Jung was right all along!

Interesting.
Do you have any opinion on those spokes?

I think I may have a couple of boxes, came with some rims I bought off someone.

they are in my personal 'top three' of spokes that are commonly available in the UK.

BTW ACI DB spokes have reasonably long 14G section at the threaded end, which means they can be shortened and rethreaded by about 15mm or so if required. By contrast Sapim DB spokes have a much shorter length and can't be cut and rethreaded more than a few mm.

Is there any functional difference between the domed head and regular ACI spokes? Cyclebasket seems to have a mix, depending on what length you buy.

it is just the age of the stock I think. ACI have made different styles at different times, and they have also made spokes with different branding on them. In SS DB I don't think there is any functional difference.
