Erotica and retro-cycling

Post by mumbojumbo »

I keep reading adverts which mention "suitable for erotica events",which seems quite racy and there follows an image of a rusty Claud Butler boasting 5 gears for £500.Am I missing something of interest to cycling hipsters?

L'eroica - not really hipsters, it's over 20 years old. It was an Italian cycling festival, but they now run them all over Europe

They run a sportive during the day and have local food, drink and music in the evenings. But the bike must be pre-1987 and the clobber mustn't be made of Lycra. (I think you are allowed a modern helmet if you choose).

I quite fancy heading to the Limburg one - looks like a nice area to explore.

I took my 1940s bike and my 1950s wife to one of these, only one of them fulfilled my expectation of the event

Well, if my knowledge of Italian language serves me correct, they better look in a Ann Summers shop then!

But now, seriously, there seems to a somewhat a myth about this event. Perhaps overrated as being held in an exotic place?
Having heard first-hand accounts of the event by two people who went there, and did the 90km and 150km respectively, the event is taken seriously by many and easy by another large amount of people.
In fact, the hardest thing seems to be equally in finding a pre-80's bicycle with suitable low gears and accomodation for the cyclists and family/friends alike.

I suspect most of us with bikes of that era are now in Triggers broom situation.
My made to measure tourer has been updated over the years....would that still be eligible?
How much pre '87 is required?

"It varies"; interestingly some events stipulate that you must use a screw-on freewheel (whether or not your cassette hub is age-correct or not, leave lone the freewheel itself) and in other events they seemingly don't care.

in any event there is usually a set of rules which defines whether the bike is eligible or not. In practice the organisers are perhaps unlikely to kick you out for small infractions, simply because they want your money.....

cheers

A friend of mine took his Cambio-Corsa equipped bike to Eroica Kentucky.
He was denied entry, no down tube shifters. :)
