Just looking at my (lack of) work space and wondering if I would be better off with a wall mounted work stand (if there is a good example of such a thing.

Does anyone use one?

If so how does it compare with a stand mounted one?

P.S. my old Lidl version tends to rotate if the bike isn't balanced for and aft.

My local bike shop has one. Enables him to work outside in his sunny yard. Not certain what make it is but maybe a Park tool.

Cyclo does a modular workstand - you buy the main clamp arm, then buy one or more mouints to go with it: a folding tripod stand, a bolt-down floor mount, a bench mount or a wall mount. The clamp attaches by quick release lever so it's easy to move it between different mounts (or put it out in the morning as take it in after work, as Paulatic's local mechanic does). It's not the cheapest (probably looking at around £150 for clamp arm and wall mount) but Cyclo tools are usually pretty solid. The main drawback I envisage in a wall-mounted stand is you can't swing the arm round horizontally or walk round behind it when you need to get at the other side of the bike. On the plus side it should be very stable - provided you've mounted it on a solid wall!

It depends on how close to the wall it is and whether or not the height is fixed. I have used a wall mounted work stand but it was a professional one that had height adjustment and held the bike about 60cm from the wall meaning that you could work on both sides of the bike. I now use a folding work stand and I would suggest that if you have limited space that this might be your best option. You can set it up against a wall so that it won't take up any more room than a wall mounted one but you have the advantage that you can move it out (or outside), if you have the room to get better access to your bike and you can fold it away when not in use. Your experience with your Aldi work stand is probably a reflection of the price point of the stand (great value for money IMO) and I think you would be better off with a sturdier one. I would suggest one that has two widely spaced legs like the Park Tool one https://www.wiggle.co.uk/park-tool-home ... and-pcs102 but not necessarily with the Park Tool price tag. If you do a bit searching you'll find similar designs for a lot less money.

I bought one, about £25 on eBay. It came with two wall brackets so I've got one installed just above waist height and one just about my eye level, it just slots in to the brackets so it's easy to move up or down. It's superb as I've limited space in my garage and I can do just about all maintenance, build/rebuild jobs on my bikes using it. The only slight disadvantage over a free standing work stand is that I don't have access to both sides of the bike, so it does mean that I have to take it out of the stand to turn it around, but this isn't much of a problem as most of the items needing attention are on the right side of the bike.

I have to use a free standing workstand as my walls are covered in bikes or shelves! 13 bikes, 8 of which are hanging on the wall. I would suggest that if you're lacking room for a workstand but have wall space then you're doing something wrong.

I bought a reasonable priced wall stand ...
I welded a sepearte tube to a plate and bolted this to the wall stand plate
This allows me to clamp the welded tube to the rafters in the garage roof .which allows tbe bike stand to hang from roof .
I have a couple of roof clamps so regardless of the floor mess.i can always work on the bike and more importantly walk around it with no obstructions from conventional stands
Afterwards the stand unclamps from roof and gets put to one side
I work as a fabricator in a workshop so the modification where very simple for me

I bought the cheapest Park Tools stand earlier in the year (their PCS-9.2). Not cheap whatever way you look at it but it's the best workstand I've ever used. If their Bench/Wall units use even the basic head that I have, I say go for it. Expensive, but you get what you pay for.
