Cheap folder

Post by robing »

I'm looking for a cheap folder for taking on the train when we are allowed. I probably wouldn't use it that much and already have 4 bikes so not looking to spend a lot so Brompton is out.
How about this one? 7 speed, accessories.

There's plenty on gumtree atm for around £100 -- if it was for occasional use only I'd buy sec hand -- I sold a 5 speed Raleigh 20" folder for £60 a couple of years ago -- had two for her an me still have one which I occasionally take on the train if necessary. Revo gears but it does OK.

It's the same as the one Aldi were selling last August. I started a thread on it and there was some discussion which you might find helpful:

Thanks for replies. Yes second hand is probably a good shout.
Maybe post pandemic there will be fewer people commuting and might be looking to sell folders.

That one doesn't look too bad. I'd avoid anything that looks like it has a steering column hinge made of stamped steel, they tend to be quite poor quality and don't feel secure.

Mind you its not as if users of such kiddy wheeled bikes descend very quickly, though I know of at least one user here who professes to go fast.......doesn't even take precautions

You don't say what riding it's to be used for.
I had the cheapest of the Dahons, Speed 7, I'm not sure if it's still available, but there's plenty of clones, the one in the OP looks similar. It was fine for a couple of miles to the train station and a couple of miles the other end, which is the only use I had for it. I wouldn't have wanted to ride it all day, though there are those who do so on similar. If I'd needed more from it, I might have made some improvements. It wasn't a Brompton fold, neither the speed or the packed size, I had no problem getting it on a commuter train, which is why I bought it, though it didn't pack small enough to get into some luggage spaces.

'cheap' is not always cheap and 'expensive' is not always expensive. By which I mean that if you buy a good used Brompton it will certainly hold its value (indeed it may appreciate, rather than depreciate) and will be a nicer bike to use and own in the meantime too. Use it occasionally for a few years and sell it on for what you paid for it; what is so 'expensive' about that...?

By contrast buying a cheap bike is often buying into less reliability, more repairs being required and a higher degree of built-in obsolescence. A cheap new bike will have lost about half its value as soon as you use it. Now that sounds expensive to me....?...

cheers

How about the Argos cross folder.

£125 cheaper than the suggested one.

Some good options on there.

In terms of what I want it for, it would only be something I could easily take on a train for daytrips etc. Maybe very light touring.
But with 4 bikes already it would be just for occasional use hence why I wouldn't want to spend much on it.

I do predict there will be more folders coming on the market as levels of commuting won't return post pandemic. In fact on of the ads seems to be one of these.

Anyhow, I am in the process of moving house (sold, now looking for somewhere to buy) so won't be until I've moved.

Thanks for replies.

FWIW, I'd always fancied a folder and last year purchased a secondhand Dahon Vitesse D7. It's been a great bike 20" wheels, IHG and a small rack on the back. I've used it frequently for shopping trips, even used a Carry Freedom trailer on the rear. Bargain at £140. I get more people talking to me about it than any other of my trusty steeds.
