where I can buy a nice selection of nuts and bolts...
...as my local community bike fixing lockdown (and now beyond) project continues to grow, where can I purchase a good selection of quality bike sized alley key nuts, screws, bolts, washers for the most common bike fixing and replacement jobs?
There are so many selection packs to chose from! where to begin...?

I'd add a couple of bags of sweepings:

Reliable suppliers of fasteners include:

If you buy a selection pack, you will probably find that there are a good number of lengths/sizes that you never use, and others which you quickly run out of. With the exception of that SJS selection which contains bolts removed from bikes, I think a lot of selection boxes will contain a lot of different thread sizes but in only one or two different lengths, whereas for bikes I think a selection of M5 and M6 bolts in lots of different lengths is likely to be more useful, and you will probably use many more of the shorter lengths than the longer ones.
For the shorter, more commonly used sizes of M5 and M6 bolts plus nuts and washers I think the likes of Screwfix and Toolstation are good value, e.g. M5:

Ooo, that looks good. Next time I order something from SJS I'll get a couple of those bags too.Jdsk wrote: ↑8 Apr 2021, 10:55pm I'd add a couple of bags of sweepings:

Somewhere nearby there will be a fasteners supplier on a trading estate. Best value. Places like Screwfix can usually beat any bike shop but my local fasteners establishment beats them hands down.

Depending on where you are, you may have a local supplier employing specialists. Here's one in West Leeds and the chap who helped me the last time with a problem - lawnmower, rather than bike - was a nut and bolt connoisseur.
https://boltandnutsupplies.co.uk/
No connection other than as a satisfied customer.
Otherwise, I'd say make a list of what you need and check the Screwfix www but don't anticipate detailed knowledge of the subject as part of the excellent service: they specialise in getting the stuff quickly to people who know exactly what they want for whom time is money.
mattscom got in before me because he made the same suggestion more succinctly

My local (Oxford) Toolmaster is good, I use them for work bolts.
I take a bag for each type/size of bolt/nut/washer and put in whatever of each (the back wall is literally covered in bins of every sort of bolt you might need).
The chap usually umms and ahs and says, is £10 (or whatever) ok? The alternative is to fairly quickly weigh them out on the magic weighing machine.
There is another similar source of bolts across town, so there may well be one near you in your town.
I stock up about 1 or 2 times per year, so location/convenience might not be crucial.

I have https://boltbase.com/ bookmarked for fasteners. The alternative up here is to drive 20 mls to be told, "We can get you some for Tuesday."

This isn't intended to be patronising and ignore it if you already knew.
Depending on the age of the bikes that people bring in, they may not all be threaded to the modern metric standard. I don't suppose anybody is likely to turn up with a classic lightweight, but an older Raleigh is a real possibility. I don't claim any detailed knowledge but as a rule-of-thumb I think any Raleigh made in Nottingham - often badged All-steel Bicycle - will have Raleigh's own threads.

Hi,
BUT be careful in subsidising critical components (brakes all parts fasteners, steering all parts fasteners) with stainless or any commoner gardener steel fastener!
As has been said, early stuff and even newer far east stuff could have cycle threads not found on modern stuff.
There are plenty lists outlining common bike threads on the net.
sjs cycles list many bike fasteners and are unlikely to supply poor or incorrect quality.
Stainless steel are ok for adding accessories like mud guards bottle rack and luggage racks.nomm wrote: ↑8 Apr 2021, 10:32pm ...as my local community bike fixing lockdown (and now beyond) project continues to grow, where can I purchase a good selection of quality bike sized alley key nuts, screws, bolts, washers for the most common bike fixing and replacement jobs?

I've always found what I wanted on Namrick, both metric and non-metric, stainless and high-tensile steel (the latter for any car suspension components)
Brompton, Condor Heritage, creaky joints and thinning white (formerly grey) hair

I tend to use these folks.
Haven't checked how they stack up against the likes of screwfix for price but a good range and good fast service through the letter box.
