Hi everyone

I want to modernise my old Raleigh Chloe bike. Its a 5 speed and has the old style lever on the stem. I have purchased a straight bar as I want my wife to be able to sit upwards. Can anyone put me in the right direction for parts, I want to keep cost down as I have just purchased a new bike for myself and my wife probably won't use this as much as she thinks... Lol

I need new brake cables, brake levers and possibly a new 5 speed shifter, plus grips.

I purchased this straight bar below

Thanks in advance

Modernise? In what way? It will get pricey very very quickly and frankly it just is not worthwhile. I vote for changing the bars as you want, fit straight bar brake levers and new cables, but leave the gear levers alone. https://www.bankruptbikeparts.co.uk/ is a good source for inexpensive parts, but the website is frustrating to use.

Hi there,
For the gears i would be tempted to place a post in the wanted section as someone here is bound to have spares lying around that they may let go for a small fee.

Upgrade potential is limited but you could probably change the freewheel, rear mech, chain and shifter for a 7 speed, but that may be costly.

If you want to keep it 5 speed but have the shifter on the handlebar then there is this:

For new cables Wilko is cheap

That means springing the rear triangle and respacing the rear hub - possibly with a new axle etc. Not something I think the OP would be happy doing. Even on the very cheap, I doubt this would come in under £50 - plus brake levers etc. 5 speed indexed bar shifters are available, for about £3, but whether they would work with the existing rear mech is anybody's guess.
