Additional bike?
For a couple of miles to the nearest shop/pub/etc?
Bikes cost a pittance for that sort of ride. Secondhand, they can't give them away.

Cheaper, I reckon, than "special pedals" or even replacement pedals.

Mick F!
A 3rd class bike ride is better than a 1st class walk any day of the week!!
Anyway, thought you were getting a mobility scooter as walking is getting too much for you now?

I have SPD s on all 3 of my bikes as it allows me to hop on with any of my shoes. I have Giant defy race bike with SPDs and I like being able to walk around normally during a day ride, unlike the three bolt system.

I also have dual SPD and flat pedals on my tourer (Shimano Deore XT PD-T8000). They were a bit pricy but they give me total flexibility on what I wear. Easily the best pedals I have used.

Thanks for the update on the T8000 pedals. Have thought of buying then but a tad expensive. Will see if I can find any reduced.

29.81 miles Moulton ride today with 3,512ft of ascent. That's 117ft per mile.
Rather tired now.

Yesterday, me and Sailor walked for just over three miles.
Do I actually need a mobility scooter?
I'd like one for the fun of it.

As for the question regarding SPDs and walking etc ........... the latter part of my ride today came through Blanchdown Wood
https://www.google.com/search?q=blanchd ... AHoECAEQAA
and one of the hills is a bit steep (to say the least) and rather rock-strewn, so I walked up it.
Later, along the river bank, where it flooded during the rains and washed away all the gravel to reveal huge stones, I had to walk too - even though it was level.

My Speedplay Frog cleats held their own, as have my Speedplay Frog pedals despite hard granite stones.

Called into Ultimate Outdoors in Nottingham today, just for a look around.

They were selling Shimano SPD-520 for £18 a pair. Only had them in white but at that price I didn't care!

As for the original question: yes they are fine in a road bike. I now have them on all 3 of my bikes.

They are a good pedal and at that price they are a steal.

Dumb question, having custom shoe inserts for medical reasons I could buy same brand shoe but could these be converted? If so a guide?

Bike shoes have stiff soles to spread the pressure; otherwise all your pedalling force will be going through an area not much bigger than a postage stamp with MTB 2 bolt cleats. Also bike shoes have slots so you can adjust the position of the cleats.
Some people cycle with orthotic insoles in their cycling shoes, and there is a segment of the bike-fitting industry which specialises in fitting wedges and spacers under cleats and in shoes. Its possible that there are different criteria for "foot correction" for walking and cycling.

I'm beginning to wonder if I should change the Look Keo pedals on my Road bike for SPDs to see if this helps with the Osteoarthritis?
Willing to try anything at the minute.

Excellent thread, I have my shoes modified at hospital so what we are saying is when they accept appointments I need to find a suitable cycling shoe and get it modified.

If its not a rude question, what is the "modification"?
If they build up the sole, I don't think that will work, because the cleat will get buried.
