Nickle handlebars toxicity?

Post by WrightsW5 »

There is a lot of stuff around the internet about the nasty toxicity of nickle, but I can't find anything about handlebars. Are they actual nickle, not just a nickname, is it a nickle compound that is safe, or treated in some way to make it safe?
My chromed steel handlebars broke today while I was riding along!!!!!!!!!! I have some nickle plated handlebars in the garage that I last used years ago, so I could put them straight on, if I wasn't wondering.

There are two different types of harmful effect:

Nickel toxicity:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nickel#Toxicity

Nickel allergy/ contact dermatitis:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nickel_allergy

...

Nickel is widely used in electroplating metals including "chrome plating".

...

You'll know if you have nickel contact dermatitis.

The amount of nickel that you'll absorb by ordinary handling of typical chrome handlebars is very unlikely to cause nickel toxicity.

Most have rubber grips so casual handling should be a none issue

Is 'nickel' the word, not 'nickle'?

All 5p and 10p coins are nickel plated. So handling money is another reason to go contactless, or wash your hands more frequently.
Nickel was a common constituent of coins hence the phrase "spare a nickel"
At the last count:- Peugeot 531 pro, Dawes Discovery Tandem, Dawes Kingpin X3, Raleigh 20 stowaway X2, 1965 Moulton deluxe, Falcon K2 MTB dropped bar tourer, Rudge Bi frame folder, Longstaff trike conversion on a Giant XTC 840 :D

I'm rigid with shock - I always assumed that money was made out of precious metals - most obviously the half-crowns I got off my granpa... turns out the bloody stuff is made of... steel !!

Try using a magnet on coins.
Just a quick trial with the coins in my wallet, and 10p is magnetic, but 50p aren't. Neither are £1.
I don't have a 20p to check or even 1p or 2p.

Thanks for the answers.
Yes, nickel, doh! I was wondering, that thing where people did stuff in the past that they were fine with and then it turned out that it was bad years later.
Silver colour coinage from 1920 to 1946 is 50% silver, I think a half crown from that period may be worth about £3 for the silver content?
