Take your cycle and see if it really fits
Something I always do - much to my wife's annoyance!

Front wheel left in even if it means dropping the rear seats, like the current Hyundai Matrix.

Extremely frustrating and annoying that manufacturers give chapter and verse regarding a car's 'infotainment' provision and cup holders but very little information - if at all - about boot dimensions and carrying capacity. Real estate cars no longer exist, 'fast back' design has resulted in their extinction. When we came to replace our original Focus Estate with a newer version we were shocked to find that my wife's wheelchair no longer fitted unfolded.

Cars are marketed as lifestyle accessories and entertainment venues, not practical vehicles.

Seat Leon Estate also does a decent job. Boot not quite as big as the Octavia's but can still keep the wheels on

I expected a diatribe about the "tragedy of drive-cycling" !

Yes they expect you to spend more money on an SUV instead so you can get worse handling, fuel consumption, a higher up roof rack and still less space than an equivalent 'slow back' estate would provide.

TDC, top dead center, or T D Cross? Surely everyone knows about them

One good thing with a new car, one can trade it in for an electric in a few years, and pocket thousands as a scrapping bonus

I'm no fan of SUVs, either for their capacity (as above) or their effects on our roads. But there are lots of estate cars still available:

Skoda, who seem to specialise in them:

My Kia Ceed SW is a small estate but with the seats down I have fitted loads of different types on bike in, almost the perfect size.

Those modern estates all share a feature which limits the space available, that being the fashionable 'go faster' looking sloping back screen and to some extent the 'squashed' rear roof results in lower boot height than the 'old fashioned' square backed functional estate. The limitations become very apparent when trying to fit anything relatively long and high, for example a wheelchair without a folding back. Lack of level load space makes loading difficult in some too.

I transport me tandem in my Astra estate, front wheel removed and passenger seat all the way forward. Loads of room in there.
