Where can I rent a Bob Yak or similar single wheel trailer?

Post by PacoJones »

Hi,

I'm planning a ride from Saint Malo to Santander in September, and due to the bikes I own not having rack bosses and me being close to their specified upper weight limit already, I plan on using a trailer to carry my camping, etc gear to keep the weight off the bike.

I'm on the lookout for a 2nd hand Bob Yak or similar on ebay, but would also happily rent one for the couple of weeks I'll need it.

I've found a couple of places in Scotland that have them for rent, but living in Hampshire means that's not much use.

Does anyone know anywhere in Southern England that rents single wheel trailers?

Thanks!

What about Burley Cycle hire? I know they have trailers but are probably for day hire in the forest, but it might be worth contacting them to see if they can assist. After all am guessing all business in these troubled times is good business.

I've dropped them an email, I think from the website they may only have two wheel trailers for towing kids around, but worth a try, thank you!

Edit - they replied already, unfortunately they don't have them.

There was a place in Nottingham called the Cycle Trailer Centre. I’ve just done a search and I’m not sure whether they are still in business, but they hired out Yak BoB’s.

Coming north there is Extrawheel based at Tadcaster I think. Looks a tidy solution and might not be much dearer than a long hire especially if there’s a demand for them s/h and sell it after use https://www.extrawheel.co.uk/m3b1s341p0 ... o-Trailers

Thank you Trev A, I found the details on Google but the phone number is unreachable and there's no website - I think they may have folded. Shame, I was born in Nottingham and haven't been back since we left when I was 6 months old, I'd have been hapy to have a look around!

And thank you Paulatic, that could also be a solution, I'll bear it in mind - I'd rather not buy one new just to sell it a few weeks later but sometimes needs must!

I took it that you weren't up for a lot of travel in England, but Halifax is roughly the same latitude as Taddy

It's getting away from cycle trailers but I believe Halifax is quite a bit further North than its namesake in Nova Scotia.

Shame I'm not looking to drag some small children behind me, I'd be spoilt for choice, and these people are only an hour away.

Just FYI, I contacted the kids bike trailer people I linked to above and asked if they also had single wheel trailers - they came back and said "No, but if we can get one, we'll hire it to you". Today I got a message saying they could provide one (a Burley Coho, all the other stuff they do is Burley as well, not sure where they are sourcing them). 75 quid for a month - I can live with that, buying a new one is 500 odd quid.

So, I figured I'd get it booked up, but notice that in the Ts & Cs they state that in case of cancellation by the hirer, no refund under any circumstances. Is that legal?

I can see that they might reasonably charge for loss of profit if I cancel 2 days before the hire period commences and they can't rent it but giving no refund if I cancel three months out? For a service they haven't provided?

I'll call them next week and see, but if anyone has any advice, I'd appreciate it. I'd book using my credit card anyway, for extra protection.

Thanks!

There are cheaper Bob Yak type trailers around like this one:

https://www.onbuy.com/gb/type-alwaysme- ... lsrc=aw.ds

I can't vouch for the quality but It only has to last for the length of your trip. There may be others, or even second hand.

I think trying to hire isn't the way to go. I know Bob Yak are expensive (around £500) but you'll easily be able to sell it on your return (you can post it, after all). Having said that, you might fall in love with it and want to keep it for future adventures  .

PS I can undestand you might just want to hire one and forgetaboutit.

Extrawheel on ebay at the moment. I've no additional knowledge of either the item or the seller.
