AKA Parliament Hill gearing...
How steep is Parliament Hill, and where is it?

Is it as steep as the hills round here?
How many chevrons and how long?

This bike is America's revenge for the Moulton Grand Union.

Surely you are aware that the G7 has been organised in Cornwall so Boris Johnson can display to the entire world what a steep hill really looks like? The Dalai Lama with a posse of Sherpas is due to attend later in the week to have their ideas put straight.

Funny that, I never had his His Holiness down as a Thorn owner, and certainly not more than one.

It's pretty steep if you climb from the riverbank.

It's in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Unlike some other national capitals (which shall remain nameless), in Ottawa the malodorous atmosphere for which the city was legendary when I lived there  (and may still be, for all I know) emanated not from within the parliament buildings themselves, but from the pulp mills and match factory on the other side of the river. :?

When the stench of the Thames was so bad that MPs could not use the terrace, Bazalgette was commissioned in the 1860s to build a sewer system to improve things.
Maybe this Ottowa stink will prompt some civil engineering?
It's the same the whole world over
It's the poor what gets the blame
It's the rich what gets the pleasure
Isn't it a blooming shame?

Tracking down the newspaper article the bbc talks about it does appear that the following requirement was the case:
One of the challenges of the State Department request was that the bike have as many U.S.-made components as possible.
Likely explaining some of the slightly curious component choices. I suspect the 10 day notice and present supply issues might also factor.

It's expensive, ungainly, useless for its intended purpose, and probably rather heavy.

So it's ideal.

the budget was just $1,500 (£1,060), a third of the minimum price the firm charges.
Price included a helmet - so pretty moderate for these days.

Just on the subject of the size of hills, here in Yorkshire, we humbly appreciate that local hills are no more than pimples, a mere irritation. eg Park Rash.

I would guess they are Curtis Odom hubs.
Thanks, I'm sure you're right, I'd never seen or heard of them before (referring to the Bilenky Shelly Horton bike, not the 'hands-across-the-pond' bike).

http://bikeretrogrouch.blogspot.com/201 ... -odom.html

I've always had a notion for building a wheelset (not that I've ever built a wheelset but there's always a first time) using the high flange Zenith hubs from Spa Cycles (built by Novatec, apparently).

I know there isn't much comparison with the Curtis Odom hubs, they have cartridge bearings, the rear hub is for a freewheel but they look nice.

Custom painted helmet, no less. I think the budget would barely cover materials.
