I don't think it's anything the hosting company can fix - they just host the code that the BikeHike author wrote (a chap called Simon Calder, I believe, though not the one from the Independent). He's the person who would need to fix it.

Just emailed Mythic Beasts and received a holding reply.
I don't expect they can help, but it's another string to the bow.
Bikehike themselves haven't got back to me since my email ten days ago.
Good morning,
I wonder if you can help.

I’m a long-time user of bikehike.co.uk but the site is down.
I’ve emailed the people who run it, but had no reply for over a week.

I see you host the site.
Do you have any information, and the way ahead, or is this the end of the road?

Thank you kindly, and please don’t hesitate to get back to me with some info.

Best wishes,
Mick.

I've just had a play with Cycle.travel .... It's quite user friendly and tracks (or is it routes!) created go straight onto my Etrex.

At first glance it doesn't seem to have the editing power of Bikehike. However it doesn't have the F R U S T R A T I O N power of Basecamp either.

Latest.
Hi Mick,

I used to rely on bike hike a lot myself, which is why we provide free hosting for it.

I've not spoken to the site owner about it, but I fear it may now be doomed, as Ordnance Survey have discontinued the API that it relied on, and the replacement essentially requires giving them a blank cheque to charge your credit card.

regards,

Paul

That's it.
I'll reply with a thank you for helping.

The Ordinance Survey mapping is nice, but not essential. .... I'd continue using Bikehike if it had any mapping at all!!

I used to find looking at Satellite and map simultaneously the most useful.

OK ---- OK --- Many frustrating hours later.

SO: A Mapometer track will transfer to an Etrex.
Create the track, then save it, then view it to get the export option.
Export as a track.
Sadly, no matter what you name it, the track only shows up as 'Track' on the Etrex. (Which is why I missed it before, foolishly I was expecting it to appear as named!)
To get the track onto the Etrex properly named... Cut the header off a .gpx file that does load onto the Etrex named (I did this in Notepad) and use it to replace the header on the Mapometer file. What a faff!

ALSO: The website ''Where's The Path'' will show you a satellite image next to the Ordnance Survey. ... It's beautiful to see!!!!

A new opening message on Bike Hike

"Still a bit broken - work in progress"

so it looks like it is being sorted out, which is good as it has been my favourite planner for years - and the most accurate for ascent.

I have pinged the admin who manages the site and he's nearly got it up and running again. Good news all round.

I made a small donation to bikehike. I hope others might consider doing the same. An amount you won't even miss will add up to something significant if enough people do it.

Email from them this morning.
Hi Mick,
Thanks for the email.
I've got most of the site back up and running - just working on the remainder.
cheers,
Simon

It's working, at least the bits I tried out. Still says it's a bit broken, but seems OK.

Had an email this morning from Bikehike Admin saying it's mostly fixed, still a bit broken. May need to reload it (CTRL-F5). I gave it a trial run just now and the bits I tried just worked without reloading.

I am very pleased about this.

It crashed my browser when I tried to zoom in on the OS map but I'm hopeful that it will be working properly soon.
