Ordered some SKS commuters in black to winter-proof my matt black commuter (Planet X London Road).

Annoyingly they sent me a set of silvers. Gut reaction is to send them back as I have not opened them.

To save the hassle i am wondering whether to just fit them and have a contrast, but am wondering whether they would look silly given the only silver elsewhere on the bike are brake discs and calipers.

What do you think?

If it were me I'd stick wanting black. It's a personal taste thing but e.g. I'm still searching round for some new black pedals for my black bike.

Returning them should be easy as they sent the wrong item (assuming you ordered black). Their mistake should mean they at least pay and you hopefully still have the packaging.

Mudguards are such an essential part of the bike that they should be considered part of the frame...
...around where I live, the lanes are covered in a mixture of thin farm slurry and mud.... without even basic mudguards you'll be covered in the stuff...
...And let's not forget that with a decent mud flap on the front mudguard- the mudguards stop the rear tyre from flinging rain water onto your seat post were it will run down the seat tube into the frame, as well as keeping rain water from entering your pedal, bottom bracket, and steering bearings..

One thing I love about this forum is the helpful advice people offer.

They certainly kept the road dirt off both me and the frame this morning so I highly recommend the SKS Commuters. They are also easy to fit to a bike with disc brakes due to only having a single stay at the front

Now that looks ace! I also agree that some bikes look naked without them - just like my feet feel naked without socks, especially when wearing sandals

Of coursew thw correct answer is that he shouldn't have a black bike. Barely tolerable for butchers bikes and genuine pre WW2 stuff but other wise the only black on a bike should be the tyre treads, brake blocks and the oil on the chain.
anything black looks heavy and dull.

Anything other than black on a black bike would be an improvement.
I don't know if I've mentioned it but I don't like black bikes.

The rule with mudguard colour is that there are no rules. My main bike is a symphony of silver and black, and I like it that way. My own taste dictates that I stick to just those two colours. Introducing a third colour would be a bit yuck to my eyes.

I'm trying to get has many different colours on my bike as possible- I'm hoping that by using conflicting colours I can achieve nausea in anyone who looks at it for over a minute. That way I can use a lighter bike lock

I've given up trying to make it look good, as i prefer silver/chrome compentents, which are getting harder and harder to find. you always seem to need to comprimise on something to maintain that shine!.

I gave up after riding and flat top drop handlebars, realising how comfortable that position was to relax my hand when on the tops, and not being able to find anything similar in a chrome version, realising that the comprise of comfort made no sense, i now just bolt the most suitable bits together that suit me and don;tworry about what it looks like.
