These were made in Newtown Wales at the British Eagle factory .I have seen a few of these all similar . Pretty basic sports bike nothing special apart from the fact it has the famous name on the frame .
This one looks in pretty poor condition .Tubing probably gas piping ……

According to this book 'Elswick -Hopper of Barton-on-Humber' by Nigel Land, that I'm reading at the moment, this may be one of the models built at the new British Eagle works at Mochdre, Newtown, Powys.
They built an 'Ernie Clements' model there at the same time, according to the book.
The book's available from the Author on ebay. A good, well researched read from what I've seen so far.

Quite a low-end/budget model by the look of it.
Interesting thread here on bike Radar about Coventry - Eagle BH bikes.

It seems like there might be some different levels with his name on, from reading that thread ?

Looking for a cheap lock up and leave bike.

He came into my shop holding out his hand and saying, " Hello, I'm Barry Hoban."
I goggled and could only say, " I know."
I think that was when he was running the Newtown firm.
It's the same the whole world over
It's the poor what gets the blame
It's the rich what gets the pleasure
Isn't it a blooming shame?

I've just searched on Barry Hoban and I find I've been dining out on my "Barry Hoban in Sowerby Bros" story more than I realised.

Here's the earliest mention I can find.

I assume you're looking for a 'road' type station-bike James, it doesn't look like there's much to choose between those, see what they've got at your local tip might be your cheapest bet !?

If the descriptions are accurate, the Raleigh has 700C wheels and the BH says 27".

All other things being equal - and they may not be - then the former will be easier to keep running.

Lovely chap. Working in my LBS back in the 80’s he bought me and the lads a bottle of Redruth Steam Beer each and sat with us on the podium to watch the racing.
The older I get the more I’m inclined to act my shoe size, not my age.

Slightly off topic but I had Hugh Porter in our shop a couple of times as we were selling a line of Hugh Porter bikes that he was promoting (I don't remember now who made them). He was an absolute gentleman just as he comes across on television commentary.

I also met Barry Hoban in my local bike shop - Go Bike in Southwell, Notts. The shop was run by Chris Sidwells, Tom Simpson’s nephew, who has since become a successful author of cycling books.

Did they ever meet more recently? Your dad might have wondered if he'd learned to talk proper at the same place as Arthur Scargill
