The 27" Intelligencia in the USA suggests the Swift Tire Sand Canyon, sidewall labeled 27 x 1 3/8.

Thank you for that lead which I’ve tried to follow up, some tyres that are available in the USA are not always available in the U.K. . From a more general 27 x 1 3/8 search this morning I’m finding forum comments to the effect that what’s written on the sidewall and in marketing information isn’t accurate, 1 3/8” might be stated but you’ll be lucky to get 1 1/4” in use.

The only thing that I recon that anyone can do is to measure the (over bead) width across the face of flattened out 32 - 630 labelled tyres, the wider ones could inflate fatter. Unfortunately it’s rather hard to find and visit anywhere that has a selection of tyres to do that measurement on. Why am I fussed about inflated width? Well in my experience the fatter they inflate the comfier the ride and the more likely the wheel is to not suffer damage. I’ll continue to keep a look-out for what’s available in the U.K. .
Don’t fret, it’s OK to: ride a simple old bike; ride slowly, walk, rest and admire the view; ride off-road; ride in your raincoat; ride by yourself; ride in the dark; and ride one hundred yards or one hundred miles. Your bike and your choices to suit you.

One day super-wide 27'' tyres will be marketed as the next super-modern 'big thing', better rolling off-road than 29 'ers (sic), everyone will rave about them. What would they be called I wonder ?
It may already 'be a thing' in that there Californ-eye-a.

If the width of tyres available in 27" just will not suit, there is always the option of rebuilding the wheels in "Continental 27".

Indeed so and I have done so on one of my bikes, however it takes time, money and effort and there’s no guarantee of how well the end result will fit in with the original bike. I was lucky to have brakes that would cope with the different rim height, etc., and very happily run one bike on 35 - 622 (700c) tyres.

For me it’s a case of knowing about the 27 x 1 1/4” tyres that are still available - and where from - and then selecting from them ones that are sufficiently appropriate to my needs. SJS are a useful source and so is Ebay; compared to 700c the choice is relatively limited and prices seem a little dearer.

They're only good for the new Imperialist sport of 'Yard Racing', or so I'm led to believe. :)

I like that, but it wouldn't scale well to smaller frame sizes. That's already a problem with 700c: BS6102 says no toe overlap is allowed, so the BB height gets higher as the frame size shrinks, exactly the opposite of what a short rider wants.
