..how common 32-630 tyres are now?
Just chatting to a friend with a very old bike which takes 27 x 1 1/4 or 32-630 tyres.
They said they were hard to get and the bike shop had to order them in specially.
I can see them on line but just wondered how rare they were.

They've certainly remained available much, much long than I expected. Not only that, but the better qualities still seem to be available, as seen in that SJSC link. I thought they would only linger on for users of sports bikes for utility riding.

To be clear I'm not looking for them.
I just wasn't aware of 17" x 1 1/4" rims.
I did check on line and there seems to be wide availability.
I was wondering how many bike there are still around with that wheel size.

Our 1979 tandem still has them.

The fact that such a range is still available from mainstream manufacturers would imply that they are still being used in large numbers. I would guess that must be in the States as I rarely see them in the UK these days.Jdsk wrote: ↑1 Nov 2021, 11:42am SJS have 9 types in stock and 3 out of stock:

There are two internet search challenges that I've failed (one related to this topic) so for those who are really bored, try finding:
1) Boris Johnson's A-level grades [moderator note: this diversion has been split off to viewtopic.php?f=15&p=1650478#p1650478
2) 650C (ERTO 571) tyres at anything other than 23mm width

Tyres for a Moulton Mini, on the other hand...there's a reason the bikes are almost worthless!

Here in the USA, it's been 35+ years since a factory bike was fitted with 27s. I bet there are in excess of a million good-quality bikes still around fitted with ISO630 rims, though. That's easily a viable market. One of my 27-shod bikes wears "Handmade in Germany" Contis and the other rolls on some fine quality Japanese Panaracer Paselas. Can't complain.
At a non-specialty store that has some bicycle-related items, to this day my experience is I'm more likely to find 27 than 700c. Why? Well, 700c-what? 19, 21, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 29, 30, 32, 34, 35, 36, 38, 42, 44, 45, 48, 50, 52, 55mm wide? In 27 they can carry the single 1-1/4 width and turn inventory.

Re: ..how common 32-630 tyres are now?
I wouldn’t say that they are rare but rather that they’re just unusual. One of my bikes is converted to 700c but the other remains 27 x 1&1/4. I’ve 27” tyres in my store ready for when I need them. The Michelin World Tours were nice tyres but no longer made, on wide rims they inflated up a bit oversize (34mm) and I like that. Some 27 x 1&1/4” are a bit skinny, not what I want at all. Does anyone know of a good replacement for the World Tour tyre that inflates oversize?LittleGreyCat wrote: ↑1 Nov 2021, 11:35am Just chatting to a friend with a very old bike which takes 27 x 1 1/4 or 32-630 tyres.

Don’t fret, it’s OK to: ride a simple old bike; ride slowly, walk, rest and admire the view; ride off-road; ride in your raincoat; ride by yourself; ride in the dark; and ride one hundred yards or one hundred miles. Your bike and your choices to suit you.
Re: ..how common 32-630 tyres are now?
The real issue is the availability of rims in 27" size.

Yes, finding new rims of that size doesn’t seem easy any more. SJS have some but I wonder for how long that will be the case. https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/rims-27-630/jimlews wrote: ↑4 Nov 2021, 9:28am The real issue is the availability of rims in 27" size.

Second hand rims are available and I’ve some in my store of parts, but one of my bikes has been converted to 700c and at some point the other might eventually follow.

The 27" Intelligencia in the USA suggests the Swift Tire Sand Canyon, sidewall labeled 27 x 1 3/8.Carlton green wrote: ↑2 Nov 2021, 11:09pmDoes anyone know of a good replacement for the World Tour tyre that inflates oversize?

Re: ..how common 32-630 tyres are now?
like Jim says rims are the issue, many 27's won't have the hook lip that holds many of the modern tyres,so very hi pressures are out in fact many tyres have that warning on them, I used many 27's and while the Yanks have many and varied choices here I used Gatorskins and they looked fairly good being a brown sidewall, and if inflated correctly not over inflated I never on these or 700's had any grip issues..will
