midges
The Best time of the year to avoid the dreaded midges in Scotland !
January, but you don't get the long hours! Honestly, I think Scotland over the winter is really beautiful.
If you're after less severe conditions, I'd recommend April. May can be lovely, but the midges are generally around by the end of the month. I've probably had as many days of good weather then as May. Also, late September to October can be fantastic, with really beautiful colours on the trees, often contrasting with a little snow on the tops.
