A quick update

Rear bearings have been replaced on the Aerospace Sport by LBS for less than £20..... good value. The hub was not damaged thank goodness - I will eventually look into getting an appropriate freewheel removal tool for future use.

New Schwalbe's and tubes are fitted, and one of the replaced tubes looks good enough for a spare.

Now I just need to........
fettle the brakes ( both sticky from lack of use)
adjust front and rear mechs
touch up scratches
polish everything
fit new bar tape & plugs (ordered)
source and fit decals

They all seem pretty straightforward jobs, but anything warranting a "heads up" - please feel free.

An economy drive is now necessary. I saw my consultant today and was told that the earliest date for my returning to work is the end of April at the soonest. Looks like half pay from the end of this month!

Regards

Decals wise, as this something I've been looking for. You've got http://www.hlloydcycles.com/ but they seem to have everything except for the sport. Or there is http://www.world-cycle-decals.co.uk/decals.php?id=101 who only seem to do the sport but all there decals require lacquering over, from what I gather.

My frames all stripped back down to bare metal again and I'm off to Bristol in the morning. Going to drop into Argos and see how much it is to get the brake bridge repaired. I'll pop into the a powder coaters who specialise in motorbike frames whilst I'm there too. As much as I'd like too get Argos to respray the frame I can't justify the £145 when a powder coat will probably cost half that.

Al: take the brakes off and clean them thoroughly, then put them back on. Works a treat. Good to hear the bearings are replaced and hubs intact. You'll love riding that beauty. New hubs make a huge difference.

Stoatie: We've got Amourtex in London and I've seen quite a few powder-coated frames done by them. Really good job, I must say. http://www.armourtexltd.co.uk/ Maybe sending it back and forth may be cheaper?

Velocals also have Viscount decals although only Pro, GP, and Sebring as well as demarcation bands.

I'm totally undecided were to get mine from for the Pro! Also questioning whether I will go for a re-spray as would be too worried that it wouldn't come out exactly the same!

Lewis: that's a worry I have, too. Plus my Pro's frame is in quite all right condition. I'm thinking of just working on the parts (plating, chrome-dipping, etc.) The wheels need to be re-laced as the spokes are rotten. Not sure if I can get the rims beautiful again; the eyelets are rusty.

It's wonderful weather here in London, so I'm taking my red flash out to pop into a bike shop far, far away (just kidding, 10 miles) and combine business with a ride.

Hey Stella, that shot really makes my day. The jersey looks great on you and the black Cons round it out well. Real Viscount spirit :D
We're STILL below freezing in NY. Maybe Bendo can send some heat our way so I can finally wear mine outside too. 8)

And I'm wearing it with pride!

At one point, I was so high on the sun and endorphins, I wanted to shout, 'Viscount forever!'

Love that jersey dearly and it's always washed and waiting for the next day out.

Vive le Viscount!

Do any of this thread's 'regulars' wonder what the none Viscount converts of this forum think about this thread...?

I wonder if they check it out or just wonder who and what we are on about. It must be quite a bizarre thing for someone to comprehend who has no interest in these bikes.

After all, there are dozens of decent bike makers in this Country of a similar standing of that era. Yet this thread has so many hits, so much information, and is continually on the first page.

I suppose it's a bit like a religion, in that for outsiders it seems a little odd. For insiders it seems obvious.

I often wonder the same thing. This thread is far-and-away the biggest thread on the forum, and it's not like Viscounts are the only decent English bike! Weird.

The Viscount jersey looks fantastic on you Stell. Good to see the floods have receded enough to allow riding to recommence.

As for you Yanks suffering minus temperatures still, I highly recommend finding the nearest open-cut coal mine and setting fire to it. Warms the whole house, if not the whole state! Slight problem with carbon monoxide fumes, but at least you'll be warm. b

I've just spent a couple of hours stripping, cleaning and reassembling the brakes on the Sport, a most enjoyable pastime.

Whilst tidying up in preparation to come in for lunch I found the rear bearings that the LBS had replaced, and decided to investigate. I rotated them by hand whilst holding the inner race between finger and thumb and found that one was really rough, the other was merely sticky.

I took the dust covers off and found remnants of grease in the sticky one, washed it out and repacked - it's as sweet as a nut, so I've got a spare. There was a lot of metal debris inside the rough one so its most definitely beyond use.

This has prompted a question for those who have changed rear wheel bearings - Which side did you find most worn? (I don't know for sure which was the damaged one on my bike, but I suspect that it was the non drive side) - just curious to see if there's a pattern.

Anyway, time for lunch!

Regards

To be honest, that's just what I've just done. Wondering what this mysterious 160odd page thread could contain. Seems like quite a little community in here.

Yet this thread has so many hits, so much information

We've given up trying to find stuff. Instead we're slowly migrating the knowledge over to here.

Cheers, guys, for the lovely comments re the jersey. I'm going to order the blue one, too to go with the blue Sport. :-)

Bendo that pictures looks beautiful. Probably a bit hot to stand that close, but still.
Triitout: For heat I've got one word: volcano! :-) They may spit at you, though.

Sooper: been wondering often enough and people are probably put off by the long thread, thinking we're a bunch of nerds, which is probably not far from the truth.

Al: well done on the brakes! They normally come up really nice when properly cleaned. The only thing I really hate when dismantling those centre-pulls is the damn spring. Ouch--a lot--when you slip.

Hello and welcome, Bicycler. Nice to see that people stop by to say hello. I know that Gaz has popped by every now and again and I don't think he's a Viscount owner. May be wrong here, though.

Due to sunny weather, I went on a little ride today again and stopped in a park on my way back for a latte and lemon drizzle.
