MTB tyres for winter hacking/commuting
MTB tyres for winter hacking/commuting
I bought a secondhand MTB from ebay in the spring (Scott Tacana) and have surprised myself how much I like riding it compared to my 'road' bike. The 26 inch tyres it came with are pretty knackered now and I'd like to replace them with a pair for general winter road riding (trips to the shops etc). There seems no lack of choice for offroad MTB tyres, but can anyone recommend reasonably priced road biased ones please? Many thanks Bill
Re: MTB tyres for winter hacking/commuting
The Panaracer Pasela Tour Guard Folding Tyre with Aramid Belt get pretty good reviews. When I get some new tyres for the MTB I'm slowly fixing up I think it'll be those. Good for roads but still give you some tread for towpaths and the like.
Just Rob please.

These are the tyres I used to replace knobbly MTB tyres:-

They made my old MTB a lot easier to ride and gave more grip on wet tarmac.

Conti Double Fighter semi-slicks in 26x1.95 will handle pretty much everything except deep mud.

Continental Sport Contact 26 x 1.6 are fast.
I've got two Maxxis Detonator tyres going spare if you want them. They're the 1.5 width.

Panaracer RiBmo are a good road tyre, roll well and are pretty well puncture resistent too, available in 26inx1in,26x1.25,26x1.5 and26x1.75,they're not cheap but they are good.

Re: MTB tyres for winter hacking/commuting
I have used both conti Double fighters and travel contacts on my MTB. The latter are much faster on the road and have enough grip for unpaved cycle paths, gravel, and hard packed sand. If you want something just for road use then something really slick is needed and I have no experience of these.

I've herd this, but how p*nct*re resistant are they?
Re: MTB tyres for winter hacking/commuting
I've got them on my Dahon Matrix. They have done about 1500 miles with only 1 puncture and that was through the sidewall.
I do check them fairly frequently, and have pulled shards of glass out, but they haven't got through the puncture protection layer.
I'm not sure how much more life they have in them though, as although they show little wear, they do have a lot of cuts and nicks in them now.
