...of any good cycling podcasts?

Postby Colin63 » 26 Oct 2009, 10:33pm

When I've got a day ahead where I'm working alone at a repetitive job I like to listen to podcasts on my iPod. My favourite is The Guardian Science Weekly show, but their Bike podcast is a bit weak. Does anyone know of a good show to subscribe to?

Well, I'm out working in the woods tomorrow so I've downloaded the Fredcast and I'll give it a go. A report tomorrow.

My favourite is Resonance FMs "The Bike Show" presented by Jack Thurston. I think a new series started only yesterday, but I don't know if it's been podcasted yet.

Jack's a proper tourer too and he does all kinds of varied shows interspersed with interesting music. Highly recommended.

EDIT: It has been podcasted already - "Childhood Daze: A youthful feel to this season opener with a visit to Lockleaze Primary School in Bristol, one of an number of Sustrans 'Bike It' schools acros the country. Plus childhood memories from Paul Fournel, reading from Need for the Bike in person at the Calder Bookshop. We get the inside scoop on the much-awaited Sturmey Archer S3X, three speed fixed gear hub, from SA's General Manager Alan Clarke."

Hmm... where is this Calder Bookshop I wonder?

I listened to Fredcast today. It's all rather American... Isn't our sponsor just FANTASTIC, I'd use their products even if I had to pay!! Aren't all our guests just GREAT! Isn't Gary Fisher AWESOME! which grates enormously In an effort to be positive about everything it's all a bit bland.
I also listened to another episode of the Guardian Bike show and I have to take back my negative feelings from the last show as I rather enjoyed it. I'll try Resonance FM tomorrow.

Yeah i like the guy that does the fredcast, but i hate the program.

The guy who runs the Fredcast, also organises the spokesmen podcast, which is a round table discussion from lots of cycling pundits (in carlton reid). The format works really well. Theres a lot of product placement, but no ads.

The Fredcast seems ok - there is a 'It's the choice of a new generation' air about it but it seems pretty imformative.

Listened to a few Resonance FM podcasts now though and yes, agree that it is king and far more relevant being UK based 8)

Otherwise theres podcasts on all sorts available online if you look, even some Beeb radio programs if thats your bag.

I'd give my vote to "The Bike Show" as well, it's a pretty good listen.

I'll add another - Sydney's Bike Love podcast from 2ser. Has a nice ambient feel like the Bike Show.

Hi all,

In a act of shameless self-promotion there's my own cycling podcast; The VeloCast which I produce with colleague, John.

Both John and myself have also guested on The Spokesmen.

Cheers,

Scott.

To be described on the CTC Forum as 'a proper tourer' is a wonderful thing and something that I'll treasure for some time to come, @caldini. Thanks for all the mentions - it's just great to hear that people are appreciating the show and that there are potential listeners out there who don't know about it. It makes it feel its worth keeping on going.

Another couple of cycling podcasts to look out for are:

- Bikescape (San Francisco based but has really good features on bike advocacy, urban design etc). http://bikescape.blogspot.com/

- Bicycle Radio. A bit like the Fred Cast in that it's oriented to Americans and to cycle sport, but still good if you're into that kind of thing. http://www.bicycleradio.com/

I just found a new podcast for racing fans if your interested. It's called Real Peleton and is by the writer Matt Rendell and TV commentator Ned Boulting. They just sit around laughing and ranting for half an hour every couple of weeks and it's very very entertaining. There are a couple of racing podcasts I try to listen to but none of the presenters on, for example, the Cycling News podcast have the ease and natural eloquence of Rendell and Boulting. Recommended.
