Roll Your Own Wheel Rim
Hi does anyone know where to buy aluminium extrusions suitable for rolling, to make a wheel rim?

You've asked this question before,

I suppose you never found out an answer!
Perhaps someone will come up with a good source for you.

If it is for the Penny Farthing would you only need a U shaped channel. I so an industrial glazing company should be able to supply the channel or the information of where to purchase.
There is a company called Edwards Metals (not me or a relative) in Birmingham you could try phoning them. They sell Extrusions.

I was wondering where wheel manufacturers get their extrusions from - then I thought that the likes of Rigida and Mavic, let alone Fulcrum or Campagnolo probably only design and market their rims.
The extrusions and the rim-making are done in India/China/Taiwan.

I guess this is a high tech penny farthing, since originals wouldn't have had extruded wheels. Might be easier (and cheaper) to roll something a bit thicker and then machine it, given the low spin rate balancing isn't an issue so a jig and router with a suitably profiled cutter might be good enough...

Re: Roll Your Own Wheel Rim
There was an article in the Model Engineer magazine by a guy who made a Penny Farthing, I'm sure it showed how to roll the rims and everything. Try enrolling on the Model Engineers Clearing House forum, I know it seems to be mainly steam stuff, but I know there's some good guys on there who if they had the articles would let you see them. I don't think I've still got the articles in my collection of ME's.

I don't know if anybody would be interested, but it may be possible to buy 54" bicycle wheel rims. This would enable you to fit bicycle tyres onto the said rim, thus the building of your own Penny Farthing, becomes a lot easier.
