Wall Mounted Cyclestorage

I have 5 bikes and Mrs Tim has little Tim on the way, so the space we have is now at a premium....so I am about to purchase some wall mounted hooks. They seem to vary in cost from about £40 each down to fiver. Hooks to screw to the wall, bikes to be hung, offset with handlebars being top bottom top bottom top.

I was hoping for feedback on any storage stuff you has bought. Wouldn't say money no object but top priority is making space and not trashing my bikes

FYI Dawes Galaxy*, Orange P7MTB, WInter bike*, Summer bike and her Dawes Sterling*

*full mudguards

Cheers

Tim

The alternative to top-and-tailing your bikes is to stagger the hooks by about a foot vertically, which should allow you to store all your bikes handlebars-up. I find it a lot easier to hang a bike handlebars-up, but your mileage may vary.

I used to use cheap hooks from Ikea that were a couple of quid each, but they provided no lateral support so my bikes tended to end up clattering into each other if I wasn't careful. I now use a Saris rack which isn't cheap, but has the advantage of a full-length track to support your wheels. This supports your bike while it's up there, but also makes it easier to get your bike up safely by wheeling it up the track.

I use these: http://www.deltacycle.com/Leonardo-Single-Bike-Storage-Hook (also available from various UK sources): easy to get the bikes on and off; pretty solid (well: the bikes haven't fallen off the hooks; and the hooks haven't fallen off the wall. Yet...); don't look too ugly when the bikes aren't on them. The only downside is that I have a few mysterious tyre marks on my ceiling from times when I've hoisted the bikes up a bit too enthusiastically...

I replaced the red plastic coated hook type with these last weekend. Very solid and multiple attachment points for greater strength (the red hooks kept on coming out of the wall).

I'm yet to find a more efficient method of storage then hanging them. Sure, having them 'side on' on a pole is good, but it's a pain to get to them.
