What lubricant etc do you use?

Post by old picker »

Hi All,
What do you use/recommend for lubricating chain, brake cable, gears etc etc?
Get this. My wife may well be borrowing the boys Mountain Bike to night to come out with me :-)
It's catching.

There is no consensus on which lubes to use.
I have tried a variety of different lubes on about twenty different chains and I have found no noticeable benefits from any particular lubricant.
Everybody has their "favourites" as you will soon see but little consensus.

Didnt you say that old MTB of your son's was hard work?

If you were a gentleman you would give up your bike for your wife.
More seriously, if you want her to become a regular cyclist then give her the best bike and have an easy day to avoid her being put off.

Lend her my new bike?
I bought it so I could get away from her :-)
Funny thing is, riding this bike, I'm sure it should have different tyres on it. I might have to get something a little thicker for the canals etc, as to my reckoning, they look like road tyres.
BTW, I popped into Tesco's and they were selling a bike rack for £15. It is the type that fixes to the saddle post. It did look good value.

I think I'll be trying FinishLine's Ceramic Wet Lube when the current cross country stuff runs out. It's based on the same technology used in modern car engine oil, synthetic so sticks to the metal better.
Reviewers are saying they notice quieter drivetrains on their bikes, which can only be a good thing.

Prolink progoldand GT85 when I am being lazy or dont have the time like this morning Chain had started squeaking didn't have time to properly lube. So a quick spray of GT85 and a wipe of the with a rag will do for today its not raining. its time to change to chain number 2 at the weekend anyway.

I'm using chainsaw oil on my chains. Very pleased with it and so far 3000 mils on one chain rather less on the other two it does what it's supposed to do, stick on the chain, even in the wet, lube the chain and not pick up muck. For cables a squirt of GT85 on the outer as it is installed seems to be all they need.

Well, who knows where it was made, what with plate tectonics and all that.

Anyway, 3 in 1 here - and no, it's not vegetable based, no matter what Sheldon Brown says.

Hi All,
Popped into Wilkinson and they were selling their own version of this,
http://www.wilkinsonplus.com/bike-acces ... tZhg%3D%3D.

Looks like it is the Weldite oil in their own bottle. At £1.41, I bought a couple to see how it goes.

You shouldn't use WD40 or anything like it on chains, basically it will clean the chain but not lubricate it, so you end running with a dry chain that will wear out quicker.
